Put a 12 volt battery in my old M Farmall - left the generator wire off ( 6 volt) but noticed output of generator is 15 volts to 30 volts -low to high RPM (using DC voltage meter-no load) can the old generator be used to charge this battery some way? Its a Delco but does not have a voltage output listed on it. Maybe change to a 12 volt regulator or remove voltage regulator and use a diode. If I should have to use a GM one wire alterintor will it work on a + ground battery ?Will it fit under the hood? Thanks for your help. John Dubuque Iowa

The generator may have been rewound for 12V already..best to take it to the starter/alternator repair shop...they will have the appropriate regulator you need. You should post this on the farmall board- guys over there have wiring diagrams for the conversion you'd like to do.

I agree with John H. Also you need to change your lights to 12 volt and you need a resistor on the feed to the points. A GM alternator will work, but you have to flip the old bracket upside down and grind a small piece out of it near the front end. This will allow the alternator to lay against the valve cover pan and the old belt will still work. I have done it several times.

Any starter with field coils will run the correct direction when fed from a pos or neg ground system. System polarity only becomes an issue with a permanent magnet field starter as used on small lawn mower/tractor type engines.
Glad someone posted that one wire Delco alternators converted to pos ground are avalible. One thing to consider is that if you install a pos ground alternator on a tractor that must run at a moments notice( driveway cleaner etc), do you have someone that stocks these specialty pos ground alternators or parts? if it fails. the pos ground conversion would need a special regulator, diode trio and rectifier unit. My point is that it might be better to convert the tractor to neg ground so standard, off the shelf parts can be used.

Used to do that on old chevy cars/pickups, use the 6V generator with a 12V regulator. The generator will struggle a bit,but will work on 12V. Regulator life will be a bit shorter because of higher current draw of the 6V generator fields running on 12V. The Delco 1 wire alternator needs neg ground. To convert to neg ground is simple and costs nothing but an hours work. 1 reverse battery connections 2 Reverse connections on the amp guage. 3 reverse primary connections on the coil if battery ignition.

When you have finished the conversion Hope it does't get 30 below. I've broken the bendix gear off. trying to start my M at very cold temps since it's been converted.
