I have had contractors working at my place for the past week. They have been thoroughly amused by all of my old equipment. Whenever they have had a menial task for me I have taken the pride to fire up an old tractor to do the job. They can't believe that this old iron even runs let alone star as easy as it does in the cold weather. Well today I went to use my WD. I turned on the gas, set the choke, made sure it was in neutral, etc. and proceeded to try starting. It always fires real easy but not today. Cranked it over til the 6 volt gave up. Took out the crank for a few tries and still nothing so I decided to break it to lead. After pulling it a short time with no luck I noticed that I had failed to turn on the switch. I flipped the switch and it fired instantly but by then my pride was shot. Of all the things I have ever lost lost my mind is the thing I miss the most!!!!!

This didn't happen in front of any people, but about a year ago my dad and I had to move my JD 80, and decided to start it as well. Couldn't use the pony as the wiring was all unhooked. So pulled it with our Case VAC. Boy was that little tractor getting a workout! But the 80 wouldn't fire! Pulled it the length of the field before I realized that I still had the decompression lever back! Ooops. Gave 'er compression and it fired right off!

I had a guy coming to look at an AC D-15 last weekend- I hadn't started it in awhile, and of course it didn't start. The Mrs. was handy, so we gave it a pull- wouldn't even fire. Started checking for spark, and was getting spark to the plugs. Finally, it dawned on me to check the gas- after puttig in the remnants of the lawnmower gas from last summer (about a pint), it took right off. Was able to drive it around a bit for the guy before it ran out again. Why don't I ever remember the check the simplest thing first?

While building my shop had some friends come over to assist with roofing. Had been working all night before to have materials staged and ready.

We all got down to shop with fresh coffee and grabbed our screw guns to begin. I went to start the power generator and pulled and pulled on the start rope. Checked fuel, oil everything or so I thought. I got mad and yanked so hard I broke pull rope - it was still long enough to pull just shorter.

Everybody was about to leave and my son says, "Hey Dad, what is this switch for?"

DUH!! My son found the off/on switch. It was in the "off" position. I then had to jury rig the shortened rope to get it started. All them fellas still give me a ribbing about this from time to time.

Winter of 2001.

Had a cold and stuffy nose and nothing to do so I figured I would play with my little tractors for a change since they can't do any real work around the farm. Gassed up an AC B and 8N and neither one would start. I was pretty preoccupied while I was doing it thinking about everything else. Cranked away with no start and killed batteries. Hand cranked till I killed my arms. Ether. Nothing. Jeez I'm thinking, must have been a bad batch of gas as I'm still sparking. Let me drain them and start over. Sure enough, I filled them with diesel.

Never told anyone.

Been around tractors for 35 years.

how about those chainsaws? Putting oil in gas tank or vice versa. Manufacturers wised up & put tanks at opposite ends so its harder to do now.

I've been running my chainsaw with a gas/bar and chain oil mixture for years.

Just doesn't seem to run that well...

Went to start the Snapper mower, pulled rope til I was worn out. Changed plug, still would not start. Pulled cover & flywheel, & checked & set points. Put it back together, still would not start. Then I realized that switch was off. Started on first pull once I turned on switch !!!

First of all I admire the respondents to this post for their character. They shared their embarrassing experiences for us to enjoy and none of them were smart alec. Just goes to show you the character of the folks on this site.

Well I too have senior moments frequently. Other than age, my problems are lack of familiarity with my equipment. I have multiple things that I use seldom (have a job in town) and just about the time I remember how something operates, the job is usually done. Thanks goodness I don't tear too many things up.

Gotta tell you this.

Had cows and had to sell out. Decided after the recovery, that I'd do hay instead. Cleaned up all my cross fencing to make a nice hay patch except for the support post for the main gate into the pasture. I had put a lot of effort into a steel gate(2 7/8 drill pipe) set into 3' x 1' concrete. Didn't want to take it down being it was so nice.....but it was all alone in the driveway.....

Well it was sorta out in the driveway. Was finishing up some square bales one evening about dusk with my trusty JD 24T square and in a hurry to put the baler up to get the truck out and p/u the bales B4 dew set in.

On the left side of the tractor was a shed with some cattle panels leaning on it and some had fallen down while I was digging for something.

Well, watching them on the left, I was only creeping along at 1-2 mph when I heard this God awful crunching and screeching noise.....I slammed on the brakes and backed up looking to the right this time.

The post had "can opened" the right side of the baler where the reel pivot bearing and support sheet metal are.

The post is no longer..... .the baler is finally fixed.

Mark

Add to "Senior Moments" the fact that the larger the crowd watching you start a piece of old iron, the less chance that it will start! Now you are really in trouble.

How about cranking on a VF4 Wisconsin for a hour, and then realize you've been using a counter-clockwise self-engaging crank on the wrong engine! Why won't this %*#@ thing run backwards????? ???

Back when we were first married, I drove 125 miles home from school, to "fix" my wifes car that wouldn't start. It was an automatic transmission. She left it in drive, instead of putting it into park. It took all of 10 seconds to get it running. I never did tell her what was REALLY wrong. Even with only 6 months of "marraige experience" under the belt, at the time, I knew better than to make her look "dumb". John

a neighbor of mine was bushhogging and cut his tractor off to move an item. When he got back on the tractor would not start-worked on it for a half hour and decided somehow the battery went dead. Too battery into town for test, it was good as ever in the process they asked a few questions and he finally realized that the PTO lever was not cut off and the automatic override would not let the engine fire. We all have em

Me too. It was a junior moment for me though as I was about 14. I remember I had been assigned to perform some task with the old H. Later on that day I informed either Dad or Grandpa (can't remember which) that I was unable to get the job done because the tractor wouldn't start. I said it cranked and cranked, but wouldn't start, which was when I was asked if I had turned the ignition on. D'oh.

Yep-been there. Was down at the flea market in Kodak Tenn. recently and struck up a conversation with a fellow about old iron when I realized I was just looking at him. I had stopped talking mid sentence and for the life of me I could not remember what we had been talking about.I finally said I was sorry but couldn't remember what i was talking about. He almost laughed and said yes I know.

Parked my old Yamaha motorcycle I use for field scouting. When I returned,it would not start, checked and had no spark. Had already removed the side panels to check for loose wires, blown fuses etc when I looked up at the emergency kill switch. Yep,it was bumped to off position :(

Been there, done that--always when I'm trying to show someone how easily my truck starts.

Years ago I delivered propane to the pumping unit for an oil well. The pumper showed up while I was there and asked me to help him restart the engine. His 12 volt motorized starter that was frictionally applied to the flywheel was on the fritz.

I cranked until nearly exhausted, then he cranked a few turns, then I cranked some more. The last time I put all of the effort I could into it as one last shot at starting the engine.

As I gave the final turn all played out, I looked up just in time to see the pumping unit moving along with the turning engine. The pumper had failed to pull the clutch.

I don't know how much oil we pumped by hand, but the well probably met its quota for the day.

To this day I haven't much cared for an AJAX engine.

Been there and done that. Rented a log splitter a couple a years ago. Pulled and pulled on the rope, was just about to call the rental place and then I found the off/on switch. It was in the "off" position.

My wife told me of a goo done. A lady was locked out of her car. Looking in the window, sure enough the keys were in the ignition and the door was locked. So, my wife walked around to the passenger side door. Yup. It was only the driver's side door that had been locked.
