Sounds like the low TA range sprag clutch is very near the end of it's life. It's worth the extra $$ to upgrade to the mechanical diode TA.

You know Jon you are the only one that has talked about the new diode TA. It is the only way to go if you are going to keep the tractor. I hade insatalled them in every thing from 806 to 1086 and they are trouble free and the warranty is great.

The mechanical diode TA's are junk about every one that was put in the tractors have failed. I have a friend that had one in a 1586 and he bought a 1086 to finish planting. The 1586 had 5 mechanical diode TA's in 9 months time. The dealer went back with a regular TA. Even the top fuel dragsters have went away from the mechanical diodes. A few of the independent TA rebuilders ar using an improved sprag that will not roll over like the Borg Warner sprag .

IH mechanics tell me some of the early production mechanical diode TA's had parts fitted too tight so oil could not get in. The one I had installed in a 3788 worked perfectly during the 5 years I owned it,so I suppose they fixed the problem. A properly set up mechanical diode must be OK as I hear that most every helicopter uses one in the rotor drive.

The helicopter has never had any one fly on it as the can't make it dependable. Also Ford put some mechanical diodes in some super duty automatic transmissions. The had to recall them and replace all of the transmissions exempt for the behind the power strokes and ford had to replace a lot of them. I said it once and I will say it again mechanical diodes are junk.

They work for me just fine. The first one was installed in 97 and is still running with no problems.
