I'm about to take possession of a 2000 Ford F150 XLT 4x4 and I am considering the aftermarket warranty. What I want to know from you guys is what kind of problems you have had with your Fords and what the cost was to repair.

Please include in your replys the year of the truck, the type of problem/repair, the cost of the repair (indicate US or CDN $), and if you are aware that it is a common problem or not.

This is a 2000 so info on trucks prior to 1997 (model change for Ford) really wouldn't be relative.

Thanks

I have a '97 F150, not 4x4 though. Has 136,000+ miles now. Change oil every 5000. Never saw a reason for 3000 since the manufacturer recommeds 5000 and auto tech articles recommend 5000 to 7000 depending on driving habits. No problems at all except one. Sometimes it has a small problem shifting between 2nd and 3rd (4 spd auto). More of a nuisance than a real problem. Shop said it would be about $1100 to have the transmission rebuilt so I just keep driving it.
Like the others, I have heard many bad things about aftermarket warranties. For the cost of an extended warranty, you are betting you will have at least 2 major repairs to justify it. That usually doesn't happen within the warranty period.

MapleStone, My 97 F150 supercab 4x4 long bed. It has 220,000 miles on her. The 4.6 V8 had a set of coil packs go out at 65,000, then the rearend totally shelled out at 215,000. This ol girl gets 15 to 17 as consistanly as the day is long. Absolutly the best truck I've owned to this point in my life.
My aftermarket warenty was worthless when the coilpacks went out, That bill went about $750. The rearend was out of pocket too, $1000.
These have been the only major repairs on this pickup.
Forget the aftermarket warrenty.
Later,
John A.

the warranty would be to me a waste of money, but thats your money and not mine.My brother has a 2000 150,biggest pile of junk he had ever owned.Rear window always leaked after 10 or 12 attempts by the dealer to fix it,and other dealers as well, engine locked up at 9000 miles due to "defective parts",rear end was repalced twice, and the thing that done it in was the wiring harness for the trailer plug shorted out and burnt the truck up.After 2 years of fighting with Ford on it,they said he abused it,and after doing all the paperwork for a lawsuit, they gave him the option of accepting a new 150,plus like 8000 bucks or they bought him the truck of his choice as long it was within the price range of his burnt up 150.Needless to say he is now driving a 2002 Chevrolet Z71,fully loaded!Me personally,I hope to never go through all of that with my Ford 350.Mines a deisel so I have about 80000 more miles to worry about it.

Member of my family blew up the engine(4.6 I think) on his 97 150 right at 100000 miles but he doesnt believe in things like oil changes. Any way he decided to fork out near 5 grand for replacement engine at Ford dealer. I would not consider this normal.Personally I would pass on the warrenty deal.

2000 Ford F-150, 127,000 miles, oil change every 3,000 miles. New tires, brakes, hoses (regular wear items)..... zero problems.

Strongly advise against the warranty.

I have not seen one yet that was worth the money.

Just think about it. THEY know the trucks well enough to be willing to cover it, and they will cover ONLY certain things. Considering what they know, how could it be worth your while?----Answer, 95% of the time it is NOT worth it.

If the machine is good enough to buy, then it is good enough to stand on its own. All you can do is find out as much as you can about it, decice if it is worth it, put down your money and live with the consequences.

my two cents,

sometimes a warranty is not worth the paper it is written-like the metal retail place in our area that has a 50 year warranty on tin but it has been established that they go out of business every 20 years or so and reincorporate as another business. You cannot get blood from a turnip-ultimately the answer is BUYER BEWARE. Did not help your f150 question, but applies in general

I have no experience with the model you are considering, but I can tell you to read the fine print in that warranty. All too often people have found out the hard way that those items on the vehicle which give trouble most frequently are NOT covered under the warranty. Read it very carefully.

Try www.f-150online, you will locate problems. I have a 98 F-150, 70000 miles, has been excellent. Ignition switch failed, dealer had to take the column apart, $426 to fix. Beware V-6 engine from 97 for head gasket problems, and into early 98. On mine replaced wires and plugs, brakes, 02 sensors, tires, just normal stuff. Has been one of the better trucks that I have owned.
