I've heard the 3-71 in the olivers and masseys, and I've heard 353 and 453 in log skidders, but I was wondering what Detroit sounds the biggest and baddest?. Actually, whats the best sounding engine you've ever heard?.
Looking for opinions here,
Jonathan

The best sounding engine? There is no sound that can compare to the sound of 4 Merlin engines in sync on an Avro Lancaster bomber.

Best sounding Detroit I ever heard is the one that's shut off. I've got a couple of 3-53s, and 2-71s. Best engine I ever heard? It's a tossup between is my '65 327 Chevy at 6000 R.P.M. with single quad. or my '65 GTO with 389 and tri-power.

Chevy 302 cu-in---either idling at 900 RPM or under full power at 6800 RPM.

As for diesels--I can live without ever hearing another Detroit 2 cycle. I like the Ford Powerstroke or the Cummins 6cyl used in the Dodge trucks.

Yes, nice engine. I went with a friend who'd just came back from Viet Nam, to pick up his brand new Z-28 Camaro. Can't remember exactly which year, but it had the 302 with mechanical lifters, Holley double-pumper carb. and M-22 rock-crusher four-speed trans. Car ran, and sounded like a space ship.

Mine's a '69, but they first were produced in '67. The 302 was used for only 3 years. 1970 is when the body style changed to the larger/longer size and Chevy went to the 350 engine.

When I was a kid back in the fifties a local trucking company had a GMC with a four banger with a straight pipe that on a still night you could hear pull away from a stop sign that was 4 miles from town and a hlll that was another 2 miles down the road.

Jonathan, There are many great sounding engines as other have testified. Yes the V-12 Allison, R-2800 Pratt&Whitney or R-3350 Wright Cyclone, A Farmall M on a straight pipe ..... .But this is suppose to be a comment on screaming Detroits. They are mentioned in the Bible when something came screaming across the heavens. my choice is a toss up between A slobbering 8V-71 blown out to over 400 horses with dual 8 in straight stacks on my cousins ol cab over Freightliner. OBTW on a still day we could hear this truck from 5 miles away.
The other is a gulf coast party fishing boat @ Port Isabel, Texas.....100 ft long 20 ft wide. Two, Count em, there were two 12V71s sitting side x side in it. With both girls screaming at the top of there lungs that boat would fly @ 24 knots. But you pay the price in fuel consumption. 18 knots was the ave. crusing speed.
Later,
John A.

Out of all the posts on here nobody mentioned how good the old Murphys sounded. The Detroits definately have an unmistakable sound. Still there is nothing sweeter sounding than a Murphy in a dragline whan you start pulling the bucket back in and you hear her load up and bellow. I guess being a slow speed engine at 1200-1300 RPM Max, it's on the opposite end of the spectrum than the higher speed Detroits and as a result just has it's own distinctive sound to love. The other sound I used to love was the main High Pressure turbine on the USS America CV66. It had an extra set of nozzles that opened halfway through turbine at high speeds. By throwing the full HP steam pressure in at the midpoint it acted, for want of a better term, like an afterburned or turbo for the turbine. I used to love opening the throttle valve that extra little bit. Now that she's been decommisioned I guess I can brag a little, I've seen the old girl run at 35+ knots or 40MPH+. Not bad for a floating airport..... Talking about the Detroits there is a site with sound clips from different model Detroits on Yahoo somewhere. I had a link at one time but lost it somehow when I switched one of my comuter programs. Maybe somebody else out there has it or knows where it is.

Anyone seen the WW 2 movie "The enemy below" about the battle between an American ship and a German submarine? On the movie soundtrack, you can hear the high pitched whine of the ships steam turbine engine/engines.

This is not on the same level that 12v-71 Jimmys or V-12 Allisons are, but since we ARE talking engine sounds, there are some samples on our website.

We definitely need to add the 460 to the files. I just remembered I have a great recording of a P-51 at full mash. Maybe I should add that.

Thanks for the compliment. Your response makes all the effort worthwhile. That's why we did those files--so folks like you can enjoy them.

The audio is something I wanted to do. Brother Mike has the good equipment to do recording, and he's a bit anal about sound quality, but knew that there is a compromise on available web server space and audio file quality. Pure uncompressed audio files are qhastly huge, but I insisted that we can do this with some compression techniques and not lose the effect we wanted to achieve. I need to kick him in the butt to do some more. I want some full throttle-ups, a hard pull drive by, and the Farmall 460.

I found one other tractor audio file about six months ago of a Farmall H and an Oliver. I'll be dipped if I can remember where I found them, but they did inspire me to do audio for our site.

I can't take credit for this, but in an earlier post on this thread, Tanklord put me on to this aircraft site. It's awesome!!

One quick question, where does those wav files go on my computer??, I thought they went into the temporary internet files, but after I cleared the temporary files, I found the info was still there as I didn't have to wait for the file to reload. My question is, how do I get rid of a wav file after I get sick of them?.

The way my computer is set up, the downloaded .wav file reside in C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\

When you clear your internet files, be sure to click the "Delete All Offline Content" checkbox. This will dump all the junk that gets glued to your computer.

This is a good question you have posed, and I navigated around in Windows Explorer to find out some things before responding.

To find out exactly where your .wav files reside, go to Windows Explorer and under Tools, Find Files, type in *.wav and search your entire hard drive. This will give you a visual of how all those things are arranged.

Most any Detroit 2 cycle. The combination of that 2 cycle buzz combined with the mechanical growl/howl of the blowers made for a very macho engine sound. My local favorite was a 12V 71 TI on a big tub hay grinder. Had only 12 inch stacks with rain caps on the turbo outlets. You could hear him doing his warmup idle 1 mile down wind. At full rpm when a wet round bale was dropped into the grinder, you could hear him for 2-3 miles in any direction, and much more down wind. Very hard to choose the sound between this and the P 51 at full song.

6-71. Was a full time fireman. Insurace adjuster could belive how fast I got there. Father-in-law owned the business, my wife of just 2 weeks called in the fire. Over 80 mph in less that 10 blocks. Of course it had oversize injectors, oversize turbo, and everything else you could add. Would that thing purr under load with the water pump giving all it had !!!!

Old truck was a 1977 Ford, with a 5 speed. New one is a cummins, with automatic. Doesn't come close to the old detroit, as far as performance. Lucky if you hit 60 mph in the same 10 block stetch. Only problem with that run, was the Asst. Chief was in the second seat. Nearly ran me out of air laying on the air horn. Call came in at 12:05, so also had noon hour traffic to deal with. Took it down the left lane all the way on US Hwy. 14 in Waseca, MN.

There is a later post of audio. Wish I had audio of the old 1941 American LaFrance fire engine we had. In-line 12 cyl. Dual ingition, 2 plugs for each cyl. Oh, did that thing purr !! Would also do 80-90 mph on the highway (mutual aid calls). Pretty good for a 1941, once you learned how to shift it !! (non-sycro).

I'll almost agree, with except maybe a P-51 doing a low altitude high speed pass. A Corsair with a P&W R-2800 ain't too shabby either. Our company has an International flatbed with a 10 liter Cummins. Even though it has a muffler, it is downright beastly sounding with the turbo a-twittering.

As to tractors, an Oliver 88 Diesel with a 2" straight stack is awesome. Our Farmall 460 with a standard muffler sounds great especially if you're standing on the operator's platform so there is a more direct sound path to your ears.

I don't have to worry about my shop and garage floor rusting. Can find every spot the Screaming Jimmy was parked ontop of.Don't mind the sound of the high winding 2-53 either. Don't forget all the oil that blows out the airbox drains too. The inline 6-71 with a straight pipe stack sounded pretty good. Used both ear plugs and muffs running that 82-30 Terrex.

That 318 Det./13 speed in an old Dodge COE with the areodynamics of a 10x15 barn door was the talk of boys at the the elevator. The juggling act was to wind it up for the High School kids, and letting up in front of the police station next door to the school. Too bad the old girl blew up on the last load of the fall. Indeed....a Brockway 361 with a twin stacked 318 takes the prize! The classic Detroit "rolling idle" sounds like business just standing still. Accelerating a full load thru 13 gears is music indeed!

Close 2nd is the 12V-71. Our local ski hill ran five 12V-71 powered Gardner-Denver screw compressors in their snowmaking plant for many years. When all 5 were on line the sound was beyond description. (Incidentally these pumps also made their own climate. In the dead of winter you could find green grass and spring flowers poking out of the ground 40 ft in front of the pusher fan radiators after a couple days of continuous running...)

My 318 seldom went through all 13 gears with a full load. That was pulling a 45' trailer with a 24' pup behind it. Legal gross was 99,000 lbs. Plenty for a 318, but my truck payments were very low.

I'm with Swamp Yankee on this one. 318 does sound good. One of the other posts just caused me to notice that I'm hearing crickets too. Too much time in the pump room at Holley Carb I guess. Steve.

A Deutz Air cooled V8 with twin turbos in a Gleaner R70, R72 in heavy crop makes me grin.
