Roaring in rear of WD

I have just purchased a 48 model WD in excellent condition. It runs great, it has lots of power, etc.. The problem is that it makes a significant roaring in foward gears. It sounds like gear noise in the rear end, or it could be transmission gear noise. It is worse in second and third, but it does it in all gears. It does not affect the function of the tractor, but it is annoying. Any thoughts on what it could be, or how I could diagnose the exact problem?

A certain amount of noise is inherent in the WD rear end and transmission due to the straight cut gears. I am with old however that checking the bearings and gears would be a good idea. 2nd and 3rd were the most used field gears and I would suspect have never been touched in your 56 year old tractor. Call your local AGCO dealer and price a real service/repair manual there. They are pretty afordable. I doubt that rearend replacement will be required, but gear replacement can get pricey.

I'd check the fluid level in the rear end and tranmission, and or change it. If you change it look for sliver flacks/ a silvery color in the old fluid. If you find a silvery color you probably have a bad bearing and or gears

Thanks old. That was my next move when I get the time to mess with it. If it is a bearing, is this repairable by an old hack like me, or am I looking at acquiring another back half?

I think the people in Oregon have the best manuals, as good as originals. Some one said they're made on a laser copier. Most of the other reprints have rather poor photos. Even the ones I got from the Case/IH dealer look like they are made on a '70s copy machine. And the reprints on Ebay are no better. One (good) picture is worth a thousand words. And hey, how about that '31 Model A that a guy gave me for plowing up his small garden when I was 16? I couldn't get it started, so it went to the junk yard. I got a big $7 for it.
