Buy it. Detroit Diesel parts are the cheapest and most abundant on the market. Use all the latest"N" series high compression sleeves, pistons and injectors. Always install new valves, seats and guides. Grinding the old ones just sinks the valves making them miserable to start. Use the heavy valve springs too. Wear quality ear plugs always when operating. Great machine at tractor shows. The Detroit scream makes dogs wimper and hide, children run crying to thier Mothers and senior citizens scowl.

These are two cycle diesels, several tractor makers used them. Parts are available all over the place, not just tractor parts stores. Truck mechanics can work on them and they seem to be a pretty straight forward rebuild, if needed.

Actually, other than the sheet metal the Oliver 990 and Massey 98 are the same. The Super 99 has a number of minor differences.

Read your comment about wanting something nobody else has. I think that way too most of the time like everyone here drives Chevy's so I get a Dodge.

Problem is, the local parts store is out to make a living and guess what he is stocking on his shelves.

I read a lot about Case lovers in here and about how great a tractor Case builds, but there is no local supply of Case parts around here. Ford, however, can be bought even at the auto parts store..... like Chevy.

25 years ago when I moved here (in urbania 50 miles from a metroplex) there were JD, Massey, IH, and Ford dealers. Now, JD and Ford.
Something to think about, especially on 30+ year old equipment.

Mark

Oliver Super 99GM had a Detroit 3-71. Oliver 1900 had a 2 valve 4-53. Oliver 1950 had a 4 valve 4-53.
