I'd like to roof a 40'X40' building without trusses, with it coming to one point in the center. it would be pitched 4 ways and have a central support column. Any ideas on how to design this or a site to visit?

The way you have it drawn, the 4 corner beams are going to be tremendously loaded. Also each of the individual rafters will be highly loaded. Not saying you can do this, more like asking why?

Now maybe you had some good times in a tent with a centerpole when you were young, but might I ask why in God's green earth do you want such a roof? The cottage style is fine (albeit a bit unconventional as yours will be) but I'll guarantee you'll curse that center post to your grave. What is it about trusses that you don't like? Maybe you want an open roof area inside?

Try Easyrafters.com for design and a Swanson speed square for proper cutting methods. Really not a difficult design with proper cuts being the key. Better check to see if you can get those long rafter members though. Anything over 16' is getting harder to get.

third party image

What like this ???

40' span with out trusses and only one center support ???

This would require boards I have never seen or heard of before. The 4 hip ridges that go from the center support to the corner of the building would have to be about 30' long. You would have to use steel beams for this.

You shouldnt have to use steel, I'm sure you can get some sort of Laminated beam, actually I'm sure you can, alot of our structural building is starting to head that way, the whole roof structure could be build using only laminated materials. Like mentioned a center support could be done away using proper collar ties. Although around here with all the snow and ice I would prop. use a center post and include it in the design of the building.

Sounds fairly simple to me. 2" X 12"s on 16" centers are suitable for a heavy snow load with a 20' span (40 PSF). Of course, with a good pitch, like a vertical foot for every 2 1/2 feet horizontal run, which would mean the center pole being 8 feet higher than then the eaves, will require a distance of approx. 22' from sidewall to center, and if you want a 2' overhang, then you need 24' rafters. You could also, if desired, eliminate the center support pole, but then would have to come up with some sort of collar ties or cables to keep the walls from pushing out.

So no matter where you put the door, it's going to be under the eaves, right?

good point... One could get around that problem by not having any doors. There is only one tractor I have ever heard of that could make use of such a structure.:>
good luck

well i swear. it sounds like a pyromid to me. you could still get a truss builder to make it up. bet he'd have all the load data and layout drawings too.
