No one can give you advice on what you should buy, too much emotion and pride there. If I were to buy one, It'd be an H for around the farm work and a B for field work. A loader and a hand clutch are like oil and water - they don't mix well. The H will probably cost you less.

Have a Super H and a '50 B and love 'em both.

I think "farmerboybill" has the best answer below.

You must compare to a 1948 and later B they are probabally both as useful.
Ask about which one will go faster on the road ?hands down it's the H

Is this question for settling an argument or have you the choice of obtaining either?
If it's the former, hard luck, no decisive outcome here and if the latter - buy both and have double the fun of enjoying and using old tractors!
Regards, RAB

John, Of course all the posts are correct. But it's likly that Pappy and the Cowman are more correct. I've owned and worked both a 39 JD B and a 50 IH H. I swapped them both for an SMTA, but I still sure miss them both too. The JD B is rugged and stodgy and primative. Sometimes that hand clutch is not where you are grabbing for it. The IH H is less primative in every respect. It also seems to give you more tractor to work with. You know John, for what you can buy these tractors for today, and just for the pure pride and joy in running them, you need one of each. Hang on to them, and pass them down the line!
Good Luck, Jared

Well the JD B why it's as popular as it is with collectors and it's cost is a real puzzle. For similar money on can purchase a JD 50/520/530 and have live pto, power steering, live hydraulics,a real three point hitch, more power, smoother running, 12V electrical and better fuel efficiency.

You have to compair the 47 & up B to the Farmall H, the 46 & down compair to the Farmall C in size, I grew up with a 41 Farmall H and a 49 John Deere B, I prefered the B for most uses, that 5th gear comes in mighty handy, we never had a loader on either but if we would have then I would have wanted it on the Farmall for the foot clutch, but for field work prefered the hand clutch, JD is slightly more confortable, on the haybine the Farmall turned a might quicker so used it there and the JD on the baler, both Identical in power

The JD would be easier to work on but thats about it. The H has more available options like 3 point hitch, live power through an MW clutch etc.(all aftermarket). As far as ease of operation the H wins out hands down. If you have ever tried to back a four wheel wagon into the barn with a hand clutch then you know exactly what I mean!

The 3-point hitch for the JD B costs about half what the hitch for the Farmall costs. I have to agree on the rest, though.

I'd say the JD-B because you can almost take it apart and fix anything with out removeing the engine

My son and I own a Farmall "H" and a John Deere "B". Both are great tractors. It depends on what you are used to and what kind of implements you want to use. I enjoy using both of them.

Take a JD B and try to back a hay wagon in the barn. The Farmall H out sold the JD B that ought to tell you boys something.
