I have drained the transmission and hydraulic pump sections of my 8n. The tech manual says that the transmission/hydraulics/differential take 20 quarts of fluid. There is only one fill location that I can find right next to the gear shift. Can I safely assume that these three parts of the tractor use the same reservoir of transmission/hydraulic oil? If not how do I correctly fill the tractor?

You are correct, there is 1 fill port for the whole rear end. Often, putting the whole 5 gallons in will get you over full, which worsens any leaks at brakes, or into the clutch housing. I suspect not quite all the oil drains, plus there may be some sludge buildup that does not drain out.

I would start with 4 gallons, and then check the dipstick, and add a quart at a time, until the dipstick reads FULL.
