Hi, y'all.
I'm about to buy a ORC for my Farmall Super A and would like your opinions on quality. Are all ORCs equal, or are there cheap ones out there not worth having?? It looks like I can get one new off of eBay for $30... What would you guys look for or ask about? Any experience with bargain ORCs? I don't reckon it makes much sense to save $20 just to run through a fence or worse if these things aren't what they're cracked up to be.

Thanks, folks.
Darren

I guess I buy the short stocky ones. They are available locally at ag stores and at the dealer. I pay around the $70-80 for them.

I don't know what kind of quality you are looking at but keep this in mind: This baby LOVES to be greased because it is the grease that absorbs the shock rather than the metal parts. I'd say that you could get by with a well greased el-cheapo vs a seldom greased Cadillac.

Been running them for 25 years on 3 tractors and never had to replace one. Course there is grease all over the PTO area of my tractor too but so what!

I've noticed they come in two variants.

One is the long skinny type, usually carried by TSC, Harbor Freight and such. They are cheezy imo. TSC sells them for about $70, and seems to think they are made of gold.

The other is short and stocky. TSC and such do not carry this one. You have to get it via a real ag supply store. They are quite hefty and hold up well. They tend to sell for about $35.

There are two main manufacturers, Hub City, and Speeco. We sold both kinds. The Hub Ctiy ones are heavier built and are rebuildable, but be prepared to pay $60-$80 depending on which one you need (input shaft size and quick disconnect or roll pin attachment).

If you can find one at an established local dealer, ask about any warrantee. It's nice to have help nearby, if there are any problems.

My experience with the ORC is with one tractor over 4 years. I am on my second ORC.

I don't know how to tell if you are getting a good quality ORC. The first one I bought came from a farm supply store and it was junk. The second one I bought came from a dealer and I haven't had any trouble with it. Think I paid around $60.

If I understand your question about malfunction,
about the only malfunction you can have is the ORC
failing to engage. I would pay a little extra and get one from a dealer, they would probably be about $20 more.
