Folks: Why is the antifreeze for heavy duty gas and diesel engines a low silicate formula, but the regular stuff for cars isn't? Also, could I use it in my car, pickup, and gas engined tractor? Thanks.

Randy, Generally speaking, the high silicate antifreeze will contribute to water pump seal failure and some other undesirable conditions such as gelation.
Generally trucks and tractor engines are expensive and that mandates better products be selected for use in them to protect and extend their life.
Heavy duty usually denotes diesel. Diesels have an additional problem known as cavitation where the cylinder wall vibrates at a very high frequency. This vibration causes microscopic bubbles to form in the coolant when the cylinder wall flexes away from the coolant. When the cylinder wall flexes back into or against the coolant this small bubble breaks against the cylinder wall and will eventually etch a small hole, erosion, in to the wall. This problem was originally thought to be with wet sleeve diesel engines only but the problem is showing up in just about all diesels.
Most heavy duty antifreeze, the kind you ask about, has Supplimental Coolant Additives, SCAs that act as a sacrificial agent to absorb those small bubbles damage. Possibly more than you wanted to know. A high quality antifreeze should work well in any vehicle.

I believe the low silica is for electrolosis prevention. Yes you can use this antifreeze in anything, it's the best you can buy.

Ok, thanks. I have seen ads for extended life coolant, ELC, by companies like shell, and texaco. These are heavy duty, low or no silicate types. Are these a notch above the other HD types mentioned earlier? Thanks.

Here is a chart that describes the different coolant types and has a compatibility chart. It includes the long life and new organic acid types.
You have to be very carefull as mixing even as little as 10% of different types,or changing types without flushing the cooling system can lead to problems of destroying the the long life additive or gelling to a terrible goo.

silicates in antifreeze is what they use as a stop leak. It is commonly called "water glass" and can be purchased at your local drug store. Also used as fire proofing on wood and canvas.

Water glass is sodium silica, it was used years ago for preservation of eggs.
