I have a Dodge Ram 1500 with 1500 Magnum. Is this considered to be a Hemi? I know the name only means the shape of the combustion chamber.

I have a 1996 ram 2500 with a 360 gas and it has been a good truck. I have not drove a new hemi yet
can't afford one so I'm not going to tempt myself. A test drive won't tell you jack unless you can pull a trailer while doing it. The car and truck magazines don't like the old 360 cause they can't burn rubber from stoplight to stoplight. My 360 is doggy at take off, 355 rear gears but will pull real good and hold the hills good. I don't pull a trailer much but can if I want to just fine.If I was trailering all the time with big loads I would
probabally opt for the cummins. In a 1500 series that engine should handle more than the truck should as I have no problem going over GVWR in my 2500 HD series.

Hemi heads have hemispherical shaped combustion chambers. The plugs are central to the top of this chamber. The sparkplugs on your heads are located off to the side of the chamber. You have either a 3.9 v6, a 318 v8, or a 360 v8.These are called wedge heads. In my opinion, a hemi don't belong in a pickup truck, they don't start breathing until they are at a higher rpm. Big straight 6 cylinders, or long stroke v8's have more torque. It's not a racecar, it's a truck.
Others may disagree.

In the old 426 hemi you a correct, doesn't belong in a working truck. The new 5.7 Litre hemi is a different story. You should go test drive one and your opinion would change too, it sure does belong in a truck. Better than the 360 could ever be.

You might be right, but a 360 can be built to have as much power for a lot less money than buying a new truck, 3 angle valve job, R.V cam, ported, edlebrock intake, new carb, block bored 30 over, decked, dual exhaust, msd ignition and the list goes on and on. That hemi might be a really good motor, but I personally can't justify the the expense. I only buy used trucks. That's why I figured somebody would a different opinion.

Max,
They are like anything else, once new and on the used lot or the paper the next year. I drove a couple but dont have one now, have a 01 Dodge with the 24 valve Cummins. I think they are worth a look though. I may try and find one when we get rid of the 95 Ford half ton. Im not much into buying new anymore my self, sure take a beating that first year on value. Yes I know you can make a 360 scream also.

You did not say what year the truck is. If it is a 360 then it would not be a hemi. They just started making the hemi recently. The hemi is a 5.7L engine, not a 5.9L (360) engine like you have.
