I would like to go to a ton truck,my presonal pick is a dodge, but I dont want a diesel, too much hassel and $$ being it isnt used for pulling all the time,in fact most of the time it will be just a daily driver, that I want a flat bed for hauling stuff, but I do want to be able to pull a trailer when I need too,and have enough power.is the v 10 worth a durn I think that the 360 is a little small buy the way I would like an auto trans and I am thinking around a 98-2000 model,I get enough shifting in my day job. thanks for all your input bob

I have been running dodge forever dont have the newest, but 360/318 are darn good the cummings is the best if i felt i needed the v 10 i would go with the diesel (although the v 10 is a good engine). I prefer standard in that size vehicle. If you look around you can find a dodge cheaper than a ford/chevy thats why i drive them.

We bought used a 2000 dodge one ton dually with a flatbed and 5 sp overdrive and 160000 miles on the clock. We drove it 600 miles to get it home and the mileage was in the 16-17 range at 60-70 MPH. We were running along side a 2001 chevy heavy 3/4 with the Duramax with an automatic and 100000 miles on the clock. It did about 18 MPG. Both pickups were empty and the Dodge rode rough because of it. The two seem to be geared about the same in high gear. I know this is probably not a fair comparison because of the different chassis, so take it like it is. Later on we took the Dodge on a long trip pulling a heavy load and the driver did not know that overdrive should not be used when pulling hard. Six hundred miles down the road the tranny locked up in gear. I guess the overdrive gear is undersized and can't take it. Just a word of caution. Top speed in fourth rear is about sixty with the engine whining so that is kind of a detriment on long trips. I have heard the Duramax with the automatic tranny has problems but ours has 130000 miles of moderately hard driving on it now and the only problem has been a water pump that just went out now.

I've got an '01 2500 4x4 with the Cummins. For me it was no comparison. Even with 4.11 gears (5 speed) I average 17 mpg empty (mix of city, highway, and around the farm). Even maxed out on gvw running 75 mph I've never got below 12mpg. coming up on 90,000 miles and engine has been great (I did have a freeze plug start to leak and have been round and round with Dodge about that, but nothing else under the hood). A V10 is an additional cost option, cuts the cost of the Cummins down a lot. With all that said for the truck, if I was getting a gas engine I'd have gotten a Ford. I use it to commute to work, as well as all my farm chores.

I have a 01 2500 4 X 4 Cummins with a automatic. Just got done pulling 18 900 lb round bales on 30' gooseneck trailer, truck 6800, trailer 6000, hay 16200, GVW 31,400 lbs. Walked the dog with it, usally do not load near as heavy but I was lazy and did not want to make a second 200 mile run. Thats the most I have had on it. Fuel ecomony is usally 19-21 mpg and with the empty trailer around 17. This load got a whopping 7 mpg. Truck has 89K on the clock.

I have a 97 1 ton Dodge 4x4 with the 360 gas and automatic. I was a little leary of this combo at first but it has served me well for 112,000 miles.I,m in construction and haul my 580 K backhoe with it . You have to use some sense with your driving and pulling but it has never failed me yet.

The v10 auto is a decent truck, good power, little harsh on fuel, but then again the diesels are no volkswagon rabbit either. I actually have a 95 1 ton ext cab v10 auto with flatdeck for sale, lots more than just a flatdeck. if you are interested email me.

You may want to reconsider the diesel since you want to use it for a daily driver as long as its not a whole lot of short trips. I drive a 92 Dodge dually with automatic and 3.55 rear . It averages 17-19 mpg empty and around 12-14 pulling a gooseneck. This is about double of what my wifes v-10 gets.Mine has 305,000 miles,no engine problems other than maintenance(adjust valves, oil and filter changes, I change the fuel filter at every oil change. The trans has held up fine,I had it rebuilt at 250,000 for preventive maintenance more than need, the clutches were still servicable, but the converter was starting to chatter. It is serviced every 20,000 with a band adjustment.I shut the OD off on hard pulls.I see no reason why this truck won't go to 500,000 with no major problems.Like everything else good maintenance is the key to longevity.

mobob, I drive a 2002 Dodge 1-ton diesel with 5 speed that is my company truck I wouldn't trade it for any other truck we have 4 of them right now. Had one with automatic it only lasted 30,000 miles. Traded for a chevy duramax w/auto now the tranny is out of it at 33,000. My dodge has 54,000 not been touched, the oldest one has 98,000 it is a 2001 never been touched. These are all diesels so can't speak for the gas motors. The diesel does cost more up front, but the resale/tradein value is comparable in the end and the fuel economy is alot better at least that is our experience. Brian

Get the v-10. You won't regret it. I have a 95 dodge 1-ton ext. cab dually with the v-10 and an automatic. Has 150,000 miles and engine hasen't been touched, except for plugs at 125K. Runs great uses no oil, good strong engine. If you get an automatic transmission always have it powerflushed every 30,000 and you will have no problems. People here might tell you the Dodge auto has problems but that is because they are not taken care of. I had a Dodge dealer tell me to go easy on the transmission when starting from a dead stop, and then once you get moving to go ahead and put the pedal to the floof if you want. I have done this on my truck and have never had any tranny trouble for 150,000 miles. Take of it and it will last a long time.

The V-10's are ok, but leave room on that flatbed for a couple of auxillary fuel cells! The 360 is real dependable and the tranny too if you keep up on maintenance. If you're into lots of cupholders and visits to Mr. Goodwrench, buy a Chibbie.

My v-10 gets 14.5 empty and 11.5 loaded with 12000 lb trailer @ 65-70mph. Try that with a Chevy or Ford gas. My Ford v-10's don't do that good.
