Our Massey Ferguson 35 is proving impossible to start in cold weather. it is a 3 cylinder model. we only get approx 6V at the supply to the heater plug, is this correct? (the battery supply is 12V to the ignition switch) how is the fuel supply to the thermostart regulated?

there should be 12volts @ the thermostarter. Check your wiring.

I have a 3 cyl perkins in MF 203 industrial I just plug in the block heater let it sit a couple hours and it starts right up. I don't even know where the manifold heater is or if one is on it I have the manuals for all that stuff if you want drop me an email at rodswinamer@yahoo.ca

i never checked volts on the thermostart glow plug, but logically it should be battery voltage. unles the battery drop its voltage to 6V while heating, you have a voltage drop along the line to the plug, probably the switch. you can try to energize the plug by a separate cable directly from the battery (+) termibal and see if it helps the starting difficulty.
the initial fuel for starting with the thermostart comes, if i remember well, from a small reservoir attached to the fuel tank or , in other cases from fuel that remains in the fuel return lines. as soon as the engine is turned over, there is supply of fuel from the return line. the quantity that enters the manifold (when the glow plug is red hot)is controlled by the glow plug itself. (the hotter the plug the higher is the drip rate through the plug into the manifold).
