take plain old soap and water and a soft sponge and take your time, alot of patience is the only way .the tractor loses about 20% of its value if you destoy the tag

OK , A SERIAL NUMBER PLATE IS USUALY MADE OF STEEL OR BRASS AND IS LITHOGRAPHED WITH BLANK SPACES FOR DATA TO BE APPLIED LATER IN THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS BY STAMPING THE DATA IN THE SPACES WITH CASE HARDENDED DIES . I HAVE USED PAINT REMOVER WITH GOOD SUCESS, IT IS IMPORTANT TO WASH OFF THE PAINT REMOVER AFTER THE CLEANING WITH SOAP AND WATER. DO NOT USE PAINT REMOVER IF THE SERIAL NUMBER APPEARS TO BE A DECAL.

And the lithography printing can be wiped out with a little 409 or other similar household cleaners. WD 40 works wonders to remove printed serial numbers, too. Like on my '60 Cub Lowboy.
