Thanks everyone for some clear replies.

In reference to the comments about me posting after I read my manual...Please note that my manual is 40 years old now and I thought it prudent to consult the board in case any of the replacement parts had advanced in either design or function.

I ALWAYS read the manual first and I ALWAYS check the board in case I misunderstood any thing. A machinist taught me to measure twice, cut once.

I will always seek to learn beyond the written word. In this case I got a great excerpt from the John Deere manual mechanics manual and some good collective wisdom!!!

Regards,

Mark

One must try to disagree without damaging feelings or ego. I was once told that one must be a diplomat, with the definition of a diplomat being this. A diplomat is someone that when really necessary will tell you to go to hell, but can do it so gently that you look forward to the trip :)

Mark, had to go back and catch up on the forum after a couple of days away. The conscientous responses you received from forum members suggests to me the legitimacy of your question about polarization. I, for one, am appreciative of your question, especially based on the quality of responses you received. Having instructed USAF pilots in a number of high tech aircraft I can heartily endorse any questions one might ask, especially pertaining to technical manuals and their accuracy. That's why we have "experts" and "interpreters".

If I tallied up all I know about tractors, I learned about 40% from trial and error, 10% from manuals, and 50% from asking questions here on the forum. There's no manual in the world that covers what is given out as friendly help on this site !!!

i agree with you mark, I asked a question about ignition timing marks and got a snotty reply about buying the IT manual for the tractor. I think we would have a pretty boring forum if everyone left their noses stuck in manuals and didn't ask questions. I am also a firm beliver in the statement " the only stupid question is one not asked" Only so much can be discussed about the weather and madcow disease.

If I had enough brains to use an IT manual, I would probably be doing something else. alvinnms

I guess that I must have missed the original posting, but I agree 100% with what is being said here. The manuals will not give you all of the answers, and anyone who thinks otherwise is learning the hard way. This is especially true if the only manual you have is an IT manual, there is an awful lot of information left out of these manuals. If you are using one of these manuals, I guarantee you will still be asking a lot of questions.

I have a hard time spending $40 on a IT manual for very hard to understand info. Does any other aftermarket company make books for the old tractors? or are we stuck with IT???
