Beaver Damage..HELP???????

I have 200 feet of arbor vitae hedge next to my tractor storage area. The beavers are steadily destroying the hedge. The Federal wildlife people won't trap them because we are in a city limits. City will not remove them either. I am not allowed to shoot them....and can't get a permit to trap them. Is there anything that I could spray on the hedge that would repel them?....and not ruin the hedge.??? Thanks.

Those beavers must be some desparately hungry if they are eating cedar. Yuck!
Use anti-freeze as poison? NEVER!! On ANY animal. That is cruel. Shoot.

Let the beavers eat the entire hedge. When that's gone, the beavers will move on to another food source. Then send a bill to the city for planting a new hedge since it's their rules that caused your property loss.

I recommend ANTIFREEZE. I know that animals think its sweet tasting or something, they kick the bucket from that. Or get a pellet gun (low noise of course) and do the 3 S's SHOOT, SHOVEL, SHUTUP. If you are in a city type area a gun of anykind will be heard. Good Luck hunting.

Never had a beaver problem, but the old kind of Listerine mouthwash (the vile tasting yellowish stuff) works really good in keeping dogs from getting into stuff. Maybe it'll work on beavers too. Watch out for the worse case scenerio though, if they all start having fresh breath, and seem more atractive to each other they'll probably start have more little beavers, course then they don't have time to mess with your hedge... so you win that way too.....HA HA Seriously, I've tried the Listerine trick with my dogs, and had several friends used the trick too and it worked. I like all the other ideas too though. There are many ways to solve just about any problem, just depends on how extreme you want or need to get to solve it.

Had problem simlar to yours a few years back. Could not shot, poison nor trap, so I used the
3s's shot,shovel,and shutup. Put a plastic pop bottle over the end of my 10-22. Was good for a couple of times , then had to replace it with a good one. All you hear is the action when it goes off.

Plant something that the beavers like to eat more than your hedges. With a better taste they should leave the hedge alone.

have dealt with beavers. was able to use the lead treatment on them. follow the advise very closely that is posted below then sit back and watch the beavers destroy your hedge. suggest since you can not use "lead" on them to try and furnish them some drinking water (anti-freeze) and maybe some hog wormer in feed (atguard). of course to all animal lovers this is only a suggestion.

AWB, You're in a fix, relentless Beavers on one side, merciless buracrat's on the other. The State or the Fed's should get involved, because if the Beaver are feeding on your hedge, it is only because they have little else to eat. Cedar variants are at the bottom of their shopping list. You've gotten some good advise; my 2 cents: 1. The eletric fence is a good idea. String it long and low and tough enough to repel hungry, angry hog's.
2. A dog on a run is good, provided he can cover the entire hedge and has an interest in his work. He'll have to stay on the job 24/7 cause the beaver work 2nd and 3rd shift pretty hard. 3. Deliver an alternate food supply. In fact, this coupled with some mix of one of the above, may work better. Beaver prefer; willow, cottonwood, poplar, alder, maple pretty much in that order. Cut it fresh and put small amounts on site.

AWB,Had a beaver problem on a property we work on. Caretaker got a traper to set a trap. In colorado leg hold traps have been outlawed so traper used a have a heart trap. We also have a bear problem. Bear had a box lunch. Can you try a hardware cloth or fencing. Philip

Try the hotest peppers you can find mix with water and spray the trees every three days.

THere are some sprays available to stop deer from eating trees, maybe they would work. I dont remember the name, but we bought it at a Fleet Suply store in MN. They contain pepper and egg whites and things like that.

CHECK OUT ANY HORSE TACK SHOP FOR AN ITEM CALLED HALT CRIBBING STOPS HORSES FROM CHEWING THEIR STALLS UP. VERY BITTER, BE UP WIND WHEN YOU SPRAY THIS STUFF. IT'S CHEAP ENOUGH.IT COMES IN AEROSOL SPRAY AND GALLON CANS YOU CAN SPRAY YOURSELF.
