I have had old Fords in the past and since sold all. I am now trying to get back into a few old tractors. My gut tells me to stick with the Fords (8N, 600s) because I had such good luck with them.

But a few old JDs have caught me eye latley. Mainly 420s and 430s.

I know you can find these with 5 speeds and live PTO which the Fords don't have. BUT other than that, are these good tractors to own, do they hold up as well as the reliable Fords? I have seen other say these models of JDs (Dubuque) are not very good.

I am looking mainly for a toy to use for fun right now. But maybe in the future do a little brush hogging. I COULD always just buy a bush hog for the BX2200 and keep the old tractor as a toy only.
It seems the JDs may cost a little more. What would you do???

I have a Ford 641, use it to hog all the time. I love this tractor, and get by without live PTO, not a big deal to me. Just run an ORC on the PTO. I also have a Massey Pony and a Farmall A. I like them all, and will probably buy a JD B if/when I can afford it. Like others said, just get what you like, for the work your talking about, they are all fun..... ....Stan

I'm not so familiar with old JD's, but a Ford 660 (any x6x model actually) has a 5 speed & live pto, so not sure where you got your facts? :)

I'd say get what turns your head & you will enjoy working on. That's the whole point anyhow, isn't it? :)

Hey Paul, you are correct. My "facts" are dealing with what I have owned. It has been MY experience the x6x Fords are DARN hard to find and the vast majority of the 600 out there do not have live. Just what I have found around here.

900 series were a lot more popular around 'here' & better than 1/2 had live power. All depends where you are located. I would think you would find similar options (or missing options) on any color machine in your local area?
