Last nite had an elderly couple we know came over for dinner. Have not seen them in a while. During the course of the discussion he was asking about the U-pick/I-work operation.

Told him about the efforts which lead to the weather. He indicated that in today's world the weather is to unpredictable and he wouldn't even attempt to farm now. He indicated that in his youth (40's, 50's) the weather was much more predictable. What is your experience?

I don't remember much of 44 as I was only 6, however, I know that 53 was alot like 2003. A very wet fall and early winter. I was beginning HS with one broken arm and the FFA class had 10A of sugar beets and we dug them by hand and chain ganged them to the solid road where they were forked onto 2 tonners for a trip to the processing factory. Kids and horses were able to mire through the muck and we got the beets. After the arm healed a couple of us helped a local farmer dig beets with a fork, pile them and he later came back in the winter on solid ground and loaded them out of the field. I'd say we are going in cycles, just like our nation is going in circles and the farmer is getting a very rough ride on the ole merry-go-round. My 2 pennies.

It's cyclical; however, I think from 1944 to 2004 is too short a time to make definite judgements.

Early '50's were the hottest summers on record in the Midwest..... ....it was really bad..... much worse than what we have now. I'd say overall, the weather is about the same as it's been the last couple undred of years. After all, we ARE coming out of an Ice Age.

Here in Southern Illinois it was high 50's today. And this evening we had a thunderstorm. Weird weather. It should have snowed around here at least once by now. Nothing yet this year, a few flurries. Tommorrow they are forcasting mid 60's, then in two days the low will be back to its normal 18 degrees. Go figure.

Too young to know weather in the 40's and 50's but my grandfather (died 6 years ago) says that is snowed in the first weekend in June in the 1950's. In Southern Mi. I also will say that it seems that in my area of Mi. that the winters have been rough one year and easy the next and have kept this on/off cycle since the mid 90's, I am talking of snow amounts and colder temps.

I'm from Wisconsin. We do not have any snow on the ground, and it has been warm. It's 37º right now. I'm 42 years old. When i was a kid we always had snow and it was very cold at this time. Our winters have been like this for 10 or more years now.

I enjoy going to Wisconsin to see relatives and look at tractors. What part are you from? The weather in Tennessee used to be a lot different back 20-30 years ago than it is now.Used to be very cold and had lots of 6-12 inch snows mostly 6 inch and lots of ice.Heck a month ago I deer hunted in short sleeves. When I was a kid you had to bundle up heavy to go hunting. My truck has bugs on my windshield right now,and had a thunder storm last night.Wow.Jan 2nd.Jack(TN).

I know from the first year we took over, there has been a lot of hard times. Our grandparents talk about this phenomena as well with the weather. No other option really though, someone's gotta do it.
