is there any good place to sell farm equip. on the internet. my grandma's thinking about having a farm sale and my uncle's wondering if it'd be better or even possible to sell everything locally or over the internet.
need some opinions, thanks

Do you have a list of the items for sale. I might be interested in some or all.

the plan right now is to have an auction, but if you wanted most of the stuff, i'm sure something could be worked out. if you email me your email address, i could get you a list of most of the machinery

I agree with paul but the one trick is to get the items before interested buyers. what i am saying is trying to sell farm equipment before say furniture dealers wont do you any justice. Now make sure an aution is properly adverticed or it will fail: and some items like say a hay rake might not do well on ebay because of shipping good luck

A good auctioneer is well worth the commission, a bad one is- well...
What are you looking to sell?

One thing you may want to consider is trying to sell things off slowly rather than all at once. It depends upon what your Grandma wants to do with the money. If she needs it to survive, sell something each month. If she doesn't need the money, she could sell off the machinery and give the cash to the children or grand-children. If she has a sale, she is going to have the expense of the sale. If she knows someone that has a good digital camera, use the web and advertise the machinery but make sure the money is good. Cash in green US dollars works great!

it is mostly machinery, so i'm guessing that an auction is the best idea correct? auctioning it off was our plan anyway, but just htought i'd see if there were any good places to sell machinery on the net. thanks for responses. i'm in northwest iowa

If it's enough machinery, your own auction is the best.

If it's just a dozen or so pieces, partner up with a good consignment auction, & make sure your stuff is sold as it's own unit, 'all from one owner'. Many people do not trust consignment sales (for good reson) but will come to buy from a 'from one owner' thing, so long as you sell it all to the highest bidder, not try to run the price up or hold items back.

If it is only 4-5 items, you can sell off one at a time, in local farm papers or want ads, or on the internet if things are around the collector status.

I would not try to sell a few things now, and then try to have an auction. The best items will sell now, and there will be nothing left to draw a crowd to your auction.

Andrew, Without knowing just what all you want to sell, its hard to give sound advice here, but I would say that if there is a lot of stuff like old tools, parts, cans, ropes and chains, jacks, grease and oil, shovels, hoes, rakes, nuts and bolts, and the usual stuff that accumulates over a period of years, you would be prudent to cantact an auctioneer and consider holding an on-site auction, that is if there are big ticket items like tractors and equipment, because those items are what will attract the auction buyers. If what you want to sell are just a few odds and end pieces of farm equipment, then E.Bay or YT auction or classifieds will do. YOu may have to pay an auctioneer a commission, but you will also sell things that you never dreamed would be worth anything to anyone.

Seriously, good web auction site. I've bought a couple of trucks (very reasonable, late model powerstokes for under $7K with under a 100K miles), a generator set, and sold a tractor for way more than I could get for it here. Great warranty program, too. As a rule trucks are cheap, farm equip about right, high lifts and payloaders cheap, dozers and skid loaders way high.

Remimber that their is the IRS if you auction. Sometime that stuff is hard to justify your original cost to them.
