The first tractor I remember driving was a 65 Massey-Ferguson. We were picking up square bales on flat bottom ground. I remember that I was to small to reach the clutch pedal or see over the hood. I did run over one bale, but someone was close by and got the tractor stopped quickly.

About 1947-48, and I was about 4-5, and my Dad put me on an old, 1930-38 Farmall A, in the corn field pulling a wagon. I had to slide off the seat and jump on the clutch pettle to stop, then let it out and jump back up into the seat.

With two men on each side pulling a total of 4 rows, and someone getting the "down" row, we got 5 rows each pass.

Everytime I goofed up, there was a bunch of ears of corn that came flying by my head. And you know it took years before I came too relize that they were not bad shots, they did not intent to hit me. But, I sure thought they were trying to at the time!!!

It took the U.S. Army to get me my first tractor ride. I was stationed in Alverado Tx. in 1965&66. I worked only at night and had my days off. I went to work in a cotton mill hauling filled cotton wagons out of a muddy field and over to the mill. Used an 8N most of the time and also an H Farmall. No one showed me how to operate a tractor. I just said OK and got on and made friends with it. Had the most fun driving the tractors into town to gas them up. I had no farming background and was the only one at the mill that could get the farmall started. Had to hand crank it.When someone would ask how I was able to get it running, I would just say that it was a matter of making friends with it. I was 22 years old at the time.

One of my first tractor related memories was before I was in school. Guessing I was about 4yrs old. I would push the hand clutch forward and ease the case DC through the gates on the cattle farm. My dad would opened them up and would then close them after I got the tractor through. Did't take alot of skill but have never forgot that and always considered that to be my first driving experience. That would have been almost 50yrs ago.

farmall f-20, steel rears, rubber fronts, steel steering wheel that would cut your fingers off if u had them in there after making a turn. so young, it had no kill button, nobody ever told me u can put it in high, let clutch out, & kill it, so, i let it idle all through my lunch!

I was very young at the time and got my first ride by accident. My grandfather's JD A was stored under a lean-to attached to the horse barn. The ground had a slight downslope behind the tractor. I was playing pretend farmer and somehow released the brakes. I rolled backwards across the farm yard and the left rear tire caught the corner of an equipment garage and stopped my journey. I was a very surpised kid.

It was in about '58 or '59. I would have been 8 or 9 years old. I would hand load an old steel wheeled New Idea manure speader with chicken litter. Then I would "get to drive" the 1945 Allis WC to the field and spread it! What a deal, huh? I still have the old WC. Some great memories there!

Mine was when I was about 6 years old. I drove a B John Deere hauling in Tobacco. At the time we had the B, WD Allis and a A Farmall, I just remember the PUT, PUT, PUT sound if the Johnnie Popper best I guess. As a kid I spent more time on the A, cultivating tobacco than any thing else.

Guess I started late -- 5 or 6 years old or so! I started driving my dads 1956 Cub in the field whild he loaded hay on the wagon it was pulling. My brother (three years older than me) wasn't interested in farm work, and my mother was too sickly by that point to help much. I've got a lot of good memories of working that old tractor with my dad.

I am kindof a young'n on this forum (no offense, really) but my mother just recently found a 70s picture of me on my uncle's IH 300. I figure I was about 7yrs old, and he stood on the draw bar while I steered it around the field. The first machine I really solo operated was a Sears SS16 garden tractor. Mowed forever on that little tractor, probably starting at about 7.

My sons are 2.5 and 4.5 yrs old, and I cant wait to get them behind the wheel of my 2n. (by that time I also hope to have a Farmall H in the shed)

Nothing better than teaching young men to respect equipment at an early age.

First tractor I remember getting to drive was a WD Allis, First tractor I remember actually operating in field was a S88 Oliver. Probably around 5 for the WD, 9 or 10 for operating in field with S88. In our family first thing you learned to do was rake hay. guess dad thought the rake was easiest thing to fix!

I was about 4/5 when uncle Leonard turned me loose on an old ford 2/9n there in the gateway by the barn and told me to put it in gear one...after getting her out in the pasture I found all the rest of the gears. I could drive before my mother could...grin...Fred OH

1st solo driving was on a Deere 60 rowcrop power steering narrow front baling straw. With my Father on the wagon loading bales straight off the baler. Had to stand up on the platform to see, steer and pull the clutch. Age 3 years 3 months. Dad would be arrested today by Children's Aid.

1948 Ford 8N w/ 2 disc Dearborn tiller.I was 7 or 8, my Dad would plow a few rounds.... so I could follow the furrow. My brother & I used to fight over which one got to plow. He moved to big town, & I bet you could not make him get on a tractor now.

I was about 6 yrs. old. Drove a 4020 with powershift while Dad kicked square bales off the 3 point carrier to feed cows. Just idled along through the mud and kept it in a straight line.

1941. Age 5. WC Allis. Grandfather sat on fender to handle clutching while I steered tractor pulling wagon & hay loader. Father on wagon. Next year I could do it myself. By age 8 I could do anything (plowing, cultivating, discing, etc). That's the way it was because most of the men had gone off to fight WW II.
