I receive a air sander from Sears as a Christmas gift from one of my children and I could not get the nut of that held the pad. I took it back today and offered to trade it with one that I could get the nut off. The sales clerk tried several himself with no sucess so I bought a different style. I heard the clerk tell a stock boy to put the one I returned and the two others that didn't work back in stock as I walked away. Now there is at least three that will have to be returned by others. Made me lose my confidence in Craftsman.

I dont know about sears quality per se, but I will say I bought a cheap angle grinder this summer, and it took all my strength and ingenuity to get that nut off - this was a black and decker I believe.

Ended up clamping the tool to the bench, and using a breaker bar on the end of the socket to budge the dum thing. Maybe there is a trick we are unaware of...

Seems to me I remember sears closing store after store a few years ago because of money problems. Now you say the quality of the things sold in the store is down.
Seems to be a common denominator there somewhere.

I think they are leaning more to the "I'm a homeowner, me and Bob Vila can fix anything with Craftsman" mentality in their ad campains as of late. I think that is thier attitude about purchasing tools also, geared toward the yuppie homeowners. JMHO, The tools from the last couple of years and Bob Vila both $uck.

I have three open end wrenches 1/2 x 9/16 bought at different times. The first one is slim and of pro grade, the second double in thickness home grade and the third is almost double in thickness of the second and is of hammer grade. The last one feels like it is a piece of metal that could be used for beating with. Here in Central Alberta most people that I know now buy Master Craft Professenal sold by Canadian Tire. Lifetime warrenty and look and feel like Snap On. Was even told that the parts in the rachets are interchangable. They are about the same price or a bit less then Crapman tools.

I used to use all Craftsman tools because of the high quality, but that has changed now. Nowadays they seem to be drifting more toward home owner quality tools rather than professional quality.

A real shame. Craftman has been quality for years. The "thick" wrench makes me wonder. My buddy just bought a plyers/ something else combo for a real cheap price. "Made in China" We desided they were plenty good...but a little heavy and thick. OK for tool companies to go overseas...free trade OK for car manufacturers to go to Mexico..free trade OK for banks to go Bamamas for cheap taxes...free trade NOT OK for senior citizens to buy pills in Canada...

the last wrench that I had replaced at Sears I was real disapointed in the finish. It is so thick at the box end that there is no way it will fit in a tight spot. "All things come to an end at last"

i have noticed most of the stuff sears now sells isn,t as good or even close to the stuff it sold years ago, i have appliances ,tools , furniture, boots and clothes, that fall apart, way too soon, and don,t even bother buying their extended warranty, its no good either.

Some years ago I bought a wrench or channel locks or some tool from Sears. Whatever,I bought the cheap one. Said Sears on it,not Craftsman. Anyway, broke it and took it to Sears for replacement. No replacement on a Sears product, only on Craftsman. Had a friend working there and he took over. Came up with a customer satisfaction line and replaced my wrench for me.
