I have heard of Bandag and know that recaps are common on semis. I was just hoping to save a few bucks on a set of 18.4 X 34s. My budget is pretty small these days and the price of new ones is pretty big.

Thanks and Happy New Year.

D & S Tire in West Point, Nebraska used to recap the front tires for MFD tractors. I don't know if they still do tractor tires or if they do any of the larger sizes. Their big thing is recapping tires for center pivot irrigation systems now. Their phone number is 402-372-5572.

Olson Tire service in Mt Pleasant, Michigan used to recap certain popular sizes. They did alot of them. You could try them.

I could be wrong, but the last I heard, Olson no longer recaps tractor tires or combine tires. Tractor and combine tires have the propensity for sidewall failure with age. We bought a couple of combine recaps at an auction sale recently, and its a good thing we didnt pay much for them as the sidewalls were shot which may explain why they werent mounted on the rims.

Many places will vulcanize a tear on a good tractor tire, but we are just too hard on the poor things to make it worth while to recap individual tires. By the time the tread is worn out, so are the cords & sidewalls & that's the end of that.

I would guess someone is or has tried gathering takeoffs from dealers & recapping the good ones, but really haven't seen mouch of it.

There is a company that goes by the name of BANDAG. I know they retread truck tires, don't know about tractor tires. I would think that they would have a website, do a google search for Bandag.

I've seen quite a few rear tires that looked like they were recapped, but I'm beginning to believe that is the way they were initialy constructed. Now that age and wear has taken its toll, the bonding layer is starting to show.

The reason we believe they are recapps is that there is no writing or name on the side anymore like they covered it with the recap.

Tim, the carcass is not usualy good enough to be recaped on a tractor tire. I never saw one that has been recaped, and I don't believe the lugs would stay on long doing normal farm work. Others feel free to comment. alvinnms
