Does fluid from the differential flow into the axle housings, or are the axle housings dry? My husband and brother are working on a 1950 Farmall H. Thanks!

We need some more info here. My H is leaking at the right axel only a few years after a new seal installation (had to open to replace a bearing)and it is definately not overfilled with oil or water. Maybe one of the "FARMALL" board guys will chime in to help. Jon

Aloha, If it has a breather hole, maybe it clogged building up excessive pressure. The axle could have a groove in it so if the new seal lip goes over the groove, it will wear the new seal or the new seal will not seal as good.

Mahalo,
Howard

Hey it's been a while since I tore into an H or M Farmall. But if memory serves me right, You will get very little gear oil inside of the axle housing. The inner bearing will get lubricated well enough from the gear oil in the transmission and rear end. The outer bearing, best pack it with wheel bearing grease and give it a shot or two of gun grease when you use it. Hope this info is correct and helps you out.

later days mate,
Jim

I have three H,s around here and all are leaking on one side or both, so the oil gets up there somehow. They do have grease jerks on the outer part by the seal retainer.

Willing to bet that if there is fluid inside the axle housing, enough to cause leaks, then that rear end is well overfilled with fluid. I'll bet that either the rear end has a lot of water in it, or there is a fluid leak from somewhere else. I'm not sure as to whether the rear end on a Farmall. and it's transmission share fluid or not, I'm used to JD.
