I have a 1954 Ford Ferguson 2085. Won't start. Here's what's been eliminated as the problem: Electrical System, fuel to the carburetor. The problem is that it backfires through the carburetor, the spark plugs are dry of fuel. Any thoughts?

if it ran before try checking points for correct gap if you got it from someone else check plug wires are on correctly the rotor turns counter clockwise on these it is easy to get plug wires on wrong, other places to check are where wire enters distributor was carb off if so make sure it is on tight no leaks around gasket. drop me an email with more detail maybe I can help.

backfiring is caused by either a leaking or open valve at spark or a cracked distributor cap which can send spark to the wrong plug.

if it ran before, & u havent had dist out, check for timing w/ timing lite. if wrong, probably timing gear prob. next, take rocker cover off & look for stuck open valve. be blessed a crack in dist cap is hard to see, may have a carbon track along crack, will cause symptom
