In a followup to the blown spark plug, what's the spark plug of choice. I used champions cause I had a Harley years ago that I put several sets of NGKs in and it ran like crap. Put champs in and it ran fine. But that was years ago and this is now. Whatr's the best plug?

When I first started pulling my JD "B", I had a set of champions in it, but after pulling about 3 times they started fouling out. I tried a new set of the same plugs and sure enough after about 3 weekends of pulling they were shot. I then tried a set of autolites and they worked fine for about a year. I used that brand of plug for about 2 years and still wanted something better because if I choked it the least bit too much the Autos.. would foul. I was very skeptical about going back to Champion but my Father said to try a set of (D12 I believe) champs. I have now used the same set for almost 2 years, and have yet to replace them. They have a long wire like electrode and very low porcelian base. If I accidentally choke her to much they simply burn the excess fuel and run fine. Dad said they are used for equipment that does not run hard or for long periods of time. Well maybe thats why they do so well.

I switched from Champions to Autolite and use them on all my 1930s tractors with great results. I won't buy Champions again because they foul easily.

I guess I absolutely cant stand not being the comic in the bunch but..... ..... glow plugs, of course :-). Oh, yeah I do have a spark plug or two. Lawn mower, wife's car, and atv all have what ever came in them. Back in the late 80's I switched from Autolite to AC. Seemed to like them better. Been 'hooked on diesel' since '92 and in reality haven't changed a plug on anything except the boat and weedeater since then (even the lawn mower has been going 6 years on it's origional plugs). Put Bosch in them and that's what spares I keep for the other stuff (like I could even find them if I needed them).

I really have not found a best plug. Some engines seem to like one brand or another. A magazine article about ignition systems stated that the heat range of all plugs is not exactly the same. The plug recommended for an engine by one plug company may be slightly hotter or colder than that recommended by another, and this slight difference is why some engines seem to do better with one brand of plug under certain operation conditions. This has proven to be true in my equipment.

I use Champions in all my tractors and haven't had a problem. Not saying that other plugs aren't better - just haven't had problems so far.

Had a lot of Champ plug problems in my tractors. Now using autolite and much better.

Champs have been great in the one lungers tho.

Experiment. If a plug fails you will have to buy new one(s) anyway so try the equivalent in another brand.

Bosch plugs have always delivered best performance. Had a couple of dead Champions in brand new chain saws back when I was a saw dealer. Never carried 'Chumpions' after that. Found they always failed early.

Anything except Champion. Only exception would be where engine requires a special plug like a 2 cycle snow mobile. My opinion over many years.

The best plug is the one that works best in the engine.

Back when I was motorcycle mechanic we used to offer a Champion tune up. Guys with a japanese bike would install Champion plugs, it'd run terrible, we'd swap in NGK, and it would run great. Not making any claim by that story, just pointing out that it's completely opposite of your experiences with Harley.

So be it, experiment a bit and see what works well for your application.

Most problems with Champion plugs. Best luck with Autolite, what I don't undestand is that Champion used to and may still be making Autolite spark plugs to Autolite's specs. Go figure.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

An interesting but useless bit of trivia. In the early years a fellow named Albert Champion started a sparkplug company he named AC after his initials. After he sold AC he started another sparkplug company simply named Champion :)
