buying a tractor

I have just bought a hobby farm and want a tractor for some basic chores around the property. The actual farming is being done by a neighbor so all I want is something for digging some post holes, pushing some snow, and maybe mowing the lawn. A bucket in the front would also be good.

I have looked at the 8n but am not sure if I would need more. Also I am worried that there might be a safety issue.

Any thoughts?

Thanks/Doug

We have a 8n and use it all the time. It can run a 6' finish mower, 6' rear blade and many more things. 800 seiers fords are also very good with more power, live pto and hyd.

It is generally agreed that 8Ns tend to be overpriced for "using" tractors. When I first got in the game I was looking at 8Ns for $3000-3500. I found a 4000, with 6' bush hog and snow blade, for $2500. The 4000 has almost twice the HP as the 8N and still has easy availability of Ford parts. If you can find something in the 800/4000 series, take it over any of the Ns for actual using. If your main goal is to go to FCA shows, by all means get an 8N.

Your uncertainty about the 8N is well founded. They are simple but lack a lot of 'modern features' and creature comforts that a more modern tractor will afford. I can sell 8N's all day long for a little over $3300. For under $4500 you could get an 885 or 990 Case David Brown with a diesel, independent hydraulics and a 2 stage clutch. Plus they're 25 years newer.

The little Fords are probably as close to the perfect VINTAGE tractor as you will find for the urban farmer. They are generally over priced but that is because they fit the bill so well. The attachments that you can get for them is endless.

As with any machinery the clue to safety is common sense. The N's are simmple and stable but abuse or stupidity leaves evil lurking just around the corner.
