How much would you consider to be a fair price for this pickup? It's a 93 Ext Cab Dually with 159,000 miles and a diesel engine with automatic transmission. There appears to be a few scratches and dings, but it looks to be in very good shape. Have noticed it had a for sale sign on it for several months and spoke with the owner today. The asking price is $8,000. Not sure, but seems a little high. Any inputs about it and the average price would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

Sounds a bit high to me. I have a 1990 1 ton 4x4 Silverado with 8' ft. bed for my tractor hauler. I only paid 4K for it in 1993. Been a good truck. Next one will most likely have extended cab.

Seems high to me, but maybe I'm just not with it. A 93 could have a 6.2 or a 6.5. I wouldn't want it for towing if it has the 4 sp. overdrive automatic. T-400 is much better. I was looking for a truck for half a year. I've got three trucks with Chevy 6.2 diesels and I love them. They are a bit underpowered, and all of mine run too hot when pulling trailers up hills in hot weather. On the plus side, though, I've got 150K, 170K, and 450K miles on them. I think the one with 450,000 mile is just a freak, though. It still runs perfect, but I'm always waiting for something to happen. Anyway, I've wanted to get something heavier, and also now need an extended cab (new baby, wife, and dog). I was also trying to find a truck with a full lengh 8' bed, which is kind of rare with the extended cab. So, ex-cab, 8' bed, 4WD, at least 3/4 ton, diesel, and a HD transmission. Just about everything I found had 180K up to 250K miles on it, and was over $7,000. Seems silly to me, most trucks are pretty well wipped with mileage that high. I was also hoping to find a truck that was old enough to have mechanical fuel injection which is more reliable than the newer stuff and cheaper to work on. My ideal truck would have been a 93 or 94 Chevy or GMC with a 6.5, but I gave up looking. I wound up buying an 85 Ford with a 6.9 and 65,000 original miles - for $2500. Full 8' bed, ex-cab, 4WD, heavy duty C-6 transmisson, hitch, and 8,600 lb. GVRW. I swore I'd never own a Ford, but, oh well.

How is that 6.9 Ford holding up for you? I driven Fords my entire life but I have never heard anything good about a 6.9 and was surprised to even hear of one still on the road.

I have a 1985 Ford F250 with a 6.9 diesel. It has 376000 miles and has never had the engine touched. So I would say they aint bad.

So far, so good but I haven't had it long. From all I've heard or experienced, the I.H. 6.9 diesel that Ford first used was the best diesel they ever had. I'm surprised you've heard otherwise, since I've never heard anything bad about the engine. Not the most powerful, but very reliable, easy to work on, and fuel efficient. Also doesn't usually have the cavatation problems the later 7.3s have. I just bought a brand new waterpump for the 6.9 (not rebuilt) for $55! Price a waterpump for one of the new diesels, like the 6.0 and it's around $300. I was working for a John Deere dealer when the first Fords with I.H. diesels came out (83 I think). We bought a couple of them for service trucks. Engines were fantastic. I know of a couple of people that had 6.9s with well over 300K on them, and only got rid of the trucks because they were rusted to death. I've heard lots of bad things about the Chevy/GMC 6.2s, but most of it is hogwash. I've got three on the road and one that's a farm/plow truck. I've never had a single engine problem. The one with 450,000 miles is starting to use oil, but still runs like a clock. I hope the I.H. 6.9 does as well.

The 6.9 IH diesel in fords was a night mare when they first came out in the 80's. HEAD GASKETS!!!!!
I worked at a ford truck dealership ane we had a mechanic that did nothing but work on the 6.9's. I would say he did at least 3 to 4 head gaskets a month under warrenty.

From everything I have seen heard and spent money on Ford didn't have a decent diesel engine until the 7.3 became the "power stroke" back in 93(?) or so. Couple of my brothers owned 6.9s and regretted ever driving them off the lot, one ended up pulling the power train and putting a 400M & trannie from an old F250 he had and the other sold his in disgust and took a huge beating in the process. I see alot of pickups sell and I don't think I've heard about a 6.9 selling in the past year. I still see a few 6.2 Chevys running around, but never a 6.9 Ford.

Once Ford had one of the best deisel engines on the road with the power stroke, then they screwed up everything with the 6.0. Local dealer sold 10-12 2003s before they told people they wouldn't sell them anymore. If you want the deisel the salesmen would give the name of other dealers that would sell them. Dealership claims everyone of the 2003s they sold has been back with irate customers and have had to take 3 trucks back - couldn't keep them running for more then a week or two at time. The 6.0 even makes the 6.9 look good.

Yeah, I've heard the same things about the new 6.0s. As far as the 6.9 goes, I think it's pretty much the same engine as the IDI 7.3, but the 6.9 has thicker cylinder walls and thus less prone to cavataition damage. Off course, less power too. Ask me 300K miles from now, and maybe I'll know if it's as good as my 6.2s. I've never been a Ford fan, but . . . we've had a lot of trucks with 6.9s around here, and generally, the engines outlasted the trucks.

Yeah, I heard something about it when they first came out, but took it with a grain of salt. I was working for a John Deere dealer at the time, and we were working on more Chevy and GM diesel trucks than tractors. Local GM dealers didn't know how to work on them, so most of my time was spend rebuilding injection pumps and replacing head gaskets on the 5.7 diesel engines. GM finally smartened up, dropped the converted Oldsmobile gas engine, and hired Detroit Diesel to build the completely new 6.2 (and later 6.5). Great engines, but they carried the negative stigma from the first 5.7s for a long time. I think you have to keep in mind, that often a dealer gets to see a lot more "bad" trucks than the good ones. In the case of the G.M. 5.7s though, they were all bad. With the I.H. 6.9s, I know of many that had absolutely no engine problems. I suspect a lot of trouble with I.D.I. diesels in pickups can be attributed to using ether, high cylinder head temperatures (sometimes caused by replacement muffler that are too restrictive), and not using a good coolant conditioner to prevent cavatation. Also owner inexperience with diesels. I've heard horror stories about evey diesel out there (except the Cummins), and I know that they aren't ALL true.

There's a reason it's been for sale for awhile....no one wants them, especially the dealers. I had a super clean 96 GMC w/ 6.5 to sell 3 years ago. KBB was $19k, dealer would give me $11k, I sold it outright for $13k....got me a Cummins. I miss the nice interior but it sure is nice not having to turn the heater on when pulling up hills in the summer....

LOL on the heater thing, been there and done that! I have a 96 6.5 too and am going to try some of the cooling upgrades that GM came out with in '97 (larger water pump and twin thermostat housing). I can't complain too much - its paid for and has 150k on it without needing major service.
