Getting ready to start painting my Allis B piece by piece as I clean them so it doesn't rust on me.
Looking for preferences in primers. Plan on priming everything and storing until the snow goes. Would prefer something in a spray can cause I'll be doing small items ie; oil sump, valve cover, steering gear and so forth.

Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas

Charlie

I use a self etching primer # Zip 834 from BASF, May say Limco or RM on the label. I use an old paint gun and leave it in there for long time. I have sprayed it over old enamel as well as bare metal. Spray it on thin , not to hiding. I have some fenders in Zip 834 that are not rusted in 10 years of being stored in chicken house. Depending on the top coat , I usually spray another coat before top coating or primming with a sandable primer. I have been using Zip 834 for at least 15 years and it works for me.

I like the high solids paint from KAR Products.Coverage is excellent with minimal runs etc. The part nos. are 84xxx depending on the color. Color matches are pretty good except the John Deere green which looks more like Oliver.Ed

I know this reply will raise some eyebrows. I have restored several tractors and old jeeps. I use the 99 cent wal mart brown primer. I use about 12 to 1 5 cans. I also have used those pistol grip hand holders that clip into the end of the can. Then I use rattle can paint from TSO and have had good results.

While spray cans nozzles have come a long way, I would purchase a small air brush or a touch-up gun to use.

I have both, and both clean quickly and easily. They save a lot of money vs. the price of paint in spray cans. I also feel like you have a lot better control of tip pattern, application pressure, flow volume, etc.

Sorry, I know that I haven't done anything toward answering your question, rather have just given my opinion and suggestion.

I just finished restoring my little Misubishi MT160D...I used Shaker cans to do the whole thing. I used Rustoleum primer on the whole tractor after sanding it by hand and using my palm sander. My tractor had 2 colors. I was able to match them exactly, one was by Rustoleum and other by another brand..The headache was all the masking I did before painting..It seemed like it took me for ever. I even made the decal on my computer and had it printed out on a high end printer. I have a picture of it if you want to see the result. Just email me at mrtractorman2000@yahoo.com
Good luck..Jer

I had a guy repaint my truck hood with Centari. He primed it with a canned primer called "High Five". Must be ok, it's holding up good.
