OK what did I do wrong

Last night we were baling along like there was no problems in the world kicking out bale after bale at 50 lbs each and about 25 ft. between them. Looked great seeing those bales drop off like clockwork, then all of a sudden the pickup shear bolt sheared. No problem put in a new one. made about 30 more bales sheared again those darn cheap !@#$^&&$#$#@ Chinese junk they call bolts. OK found an old American bolt jury rigs it to fit (not the way I like to do things but it was late and I wanted to get that field done.) started to bale and all of sudden it was not tying the left side. Took a look to see why and this is what I found.

Now my question why it brake only one needle like this. had to hit something. If out of time then why not both needles. Will take a good look today but i got hay to bale so I'm going to try welding it back and see what happens.

When you threaded the twine did you go through insulater before threading needle? I forgot to do that once and when the knot from spliceing two balls of twine came to hole in needle it caught and pulled the needle off to side and came against something and broke. That only took the one needle that was threaded wrong.

It's a New Holland baler, that's where ya went wrong. Shoulda used a Massey... lol

Dunno why something like that would just break on 1 side. Kinda odd....

clean hay and stuff off top of bale chamber near the star wheel. there should be a spring there. see if it is broke. friend of mine had that happen and they broke the needles twice until they found out why.

I can sympathize with you but can offer no solution to the problem but to offer my experience. I was grinding Ear Corn for my cows with an old Belt driven Letz Burr Mill and a rock caused the Trip on the bottom of the machine to open. Looked and found that the shear was a round wood like dowl.So smarty me i replaced it with a common bolt and the next rock totally destroyed the Burrs and some other stuff. No more Burr Mill. End of story.

What you did wrong was replacing that shear bolt with a regular bolt and then busting more expensive items! The shear bolts are meant to shear. One thing always to remember, always look for the underlying problem. You have to ask yourself, WHY is the the bolt shearing? Not just, "the shear bolt broke, better put something stronger in there!".

I speak out of experience by the way! I think we have all done something like this, not looking too far into the problem. Hope everything works out!

I took an American bolt out and replaced it with Chinese JUNK, you know those bolts that are made from hard butter when that broke I put in another American bolt that matched the one I took out. The reason for the original bolt to break was over load of the feed system. None of which has anything to do with the needles. What i can't figure out is why break one if it hit the ram because it was out of time then both would break wouldn't they.
I'm thinking that maybe it was to tight against the knotter or something got in there and pushed it out because the end piece was on top of the bale shoot. Well when i get another one or fix this one if I can find the missing piece I will be sure to check all the setting before baling.
