I'm looking at new or newer tractors and noticed that some of the smaller lower end tractors engines are made overseas like MF1230 is made by Iseki,JD790 and JD990 are made by Yanmar.Would they be considered a Grey Tractor. Is Kioti considered a grey tractor.Any advise on choosing a tractor on a 10k budget would be appreciated.I would like to retire my Ford 8N,so something in that size range would be great.

Head over to the CUT site at Tractor By Net. They'll answer your questions better over there.

Hi, I just had my Kubota L3130 delivered today. I look at other tractors and just felt this is the one that would replace my Ford 600 the best. They have smaller ones. There all good if you can find yourself a good dealer. Another thing going for Kubota is that there is getting to be quite afew dealers around---starting to catch up with the green and blue. I got a Kubota L3830 this summer. I think they are one of the best values out there. I like the Kubota due to the fact its all Kubota. My choices came down to the New Holland and Kubota. I feel pretty good about my decision. Oh, it did take me 4 months to decide because I looked at all the major competitors out there and compared everything.

Grey market tractors are tractors manf. overseas for overseas markets & not meant to be sent to US but get over here by unauthorized (by the manufacturer) distribution. Legal but not meant by the Original Equipment Manufacturer {OEM} to be sent here. Regular tractors may be manf. here or overseas, but are built to U.S. specifications.

It's often a matter of regional pricing as well. The identical 2002 GMC pickup we bought was $5200.00 Canadian cheaper in Toronto than in Detroit. Identical 5000W honda generators were 1800.00 US and $1900.00 here.

Yes, you have it right. It started out as more of an anti competition thing. People figured out that Yanmars were John Deere's for thousands less. Of course the official reason is for the consumers safety :) Parts can be difficult to get for Grey market tractors.

First thing is what are you looking at doing with your tractor? You doing a little mowing and maybe breaking a garden or using it to clean barns and do some small acreage farming? If i was going ot use it for light work I would look at something like a Branson or Mahindra (Spelling) or someting along those lines. For heaverier work these might be ok as well but one of the small Jd's or Long or something like that might be worth the price in reliability. Kubota makes a good one and the parts supply and support is really good as well.

also if your tractor does end up being a grey market tractor, parts may be hard to get, even if you figure out what parts you need, many dealers are asking for sn#'s to verify that they are not selling parts to the grey market tractors, and i have heard of some that flat out refuse to sell the part after finding out

grey market tractors have a few differences than our north american models, mainly if there is no english decals, no pto shields, no roll guard, and the throttle linkage is backwards to US models, i believe US models accelerate when the lever is pushed ahead, and the grey tractors accelerate when the lever is pulled back. i believe that is correct, either way they are opposite

doug;
Our Fords,Fergusons and Farmalls all had throttle linkage set up to where you pulled the throtle handel toward you to speed up the engine. I suppose that makes them grey market tractors. Dont remember how the Cockshutt throttle worked and the on the 706 you pulled the throttle handle down to increase the engine speed.

Doug is correct about the throttle, at some point in the last 20-30 years OSHA mandated the change for safety reasons. Most older US models have pull-to- increase throttles, but have changed on newer models. Some examples: JD 4020- pull; JD 4030-push, IH 966-pull; IH 986-push. Also, most gray market tractors do not have the required pto shield, and will have as many as 4 pto speeds compared to the standard 540 or 1,000 rpm that we are accustomed to. That's not really a problem if you're multi-lingual, as most don't have english labels on the controls. Think about operating your 540 rpm flail mower at 1,000 rpm! And I know from personal experience that Yanmar will not "knowingly" sell parts for a gray market tractor. Seems that if they were to support them, they would then assume product liability for the tractors.

Gary: Some time back I had the privelege of operating a 5510 JD but I dont remember how the throttle worked. Didnt know about the OSHA rule. I retired and dont operate tractors anymore anyway.

I have a Kubota L3000DT 4-wheel drive and I just
love it. It has always worked well for me. My best understanding is that Kubota is the only
tractor made today without Chinese parts. I got
a really good deal on mind, but if I were to do it over again I would have gotten the L2600.
Mainly because I dont really need 4-wheel drive.
In my area a L2600 would come in well below your
cost limit.

I have heard that Kubota and JD are involved with Chinese tractor manufacture now too. Oh well...

just bought a 04 dk 35 kioti. love the syncro shuttle, plenty of power and in my opinion worth every cent in comparison to jd,kubota, just as good if not better just not as expensive.
