I guess everyone has about had it with how many times this scam thing has been posted but I gotta pass this one on just to show there's a sucker born every minute. The local paper (Edmonton) had an article earlier this week about two local guys who got scammed (separately) for $50000 and $25000. Hard to believe, but what is even harder to believe is the banks. WOuldn't you think these kind of transactions (however they work) would be red-flagged somehow and the people involved be alerted to what's going on? I promise not to bring the topic up again.

That's nothing.

A law firm here in Michigan lost over $2 MILLION when one of their employees fell for the scam.

Apparently, the banks could care less about watching out for their customer's money. In this case, the employee had a limit on how big of a transfer she could make, but the bank didn't bat an eye when she started transferring hundreds of thousands of dollars overseas.

Note that this was a trust account, so much of the money actually belonged to clients of the law firm.

The last I heard, the law firm was suing the bank for restitution.

Why would you bring this topic up again....

:) Oh, I mean, I've always wondered too how the bank lets people fall for this. You would think some common sense would fall out of someone somewhere along the chain.

It's the same with all the spam on 'buy prescription drugs' we get in emails - (if you aren't getting much, your server is screening it out..) it's just silly, all the spam would stop if people would _not_ reply to it.

I wish no one would respond positively to spam & telemarketing. It would go away on it's own. Life would be a better place. :)

Please be careful about mentioning scams or asking a question somebody may have heard before. Some are so curious they feel compelled to read them and then get upset because they have read it before and then must chastise us all.

There is only one way to be caught in this scheme - Greed!

Somebody was looking to score some easy cash and found out the hard way that there are bad people in this world. It looked too good to be true, but their greed got in the way of their common sense.

Obviously these scams do work or it wouldn't continue. I don't think it hurts to bring up this subject every so often, it might keep one of us from being scammed.

I was contacted by a fellow who wanted to buy a Ford 901 diesel I had for sale--he sent me a $7000 "certified check" after I went along with his scam for a couple of weeks. I was only asking $1500 for the tractor and he claimed that "they" made a mistake when cutting the check--asked me to wire back the difference. I still have the check as a souvenir....

You need to notify the local police or treasury dept. that you have what you think is a fake certified check. There was a big article on local TV about the number of fake certified checks being passed and how you should contact local police so they could try and find the source of these fakes. If you have name and address that should help them find a starting point of this national scam.
