I have a 1986 F250 with a 302 EFI motor. This morning i went out to start it and it wouldn't. Im suspecting it has something to do with fuel not electric. Its happened before but but quit doing it until it got colder out.

Here's the trouble, the motor turns over , wants to fire but wont, kinda chugs, like it isn't getting enough gas ?? Happened before and changed fuel filter, would good after, that was only a year ago, is it the inline fuel pump ?? or maybe could it be electric, ??

Any idea's ?

Might be your fuel pump

Shep has you heading in the right direction. I've got an 87 Mercury car...302...does exactly what you've described, and it doesn't start because the fuel pump doesn't build up pressure. I've even got a jumper wire cliped on the wires by the relay, so if I have to, I simply jump the fuel pump relay and turn the fuel pump on. On mine, there are 3 relays on the left (drivers side) I've never been able to find a wiring diagram to know what they are for sure, one is for the fuel pump and one is for the AC and the other one I don't know. Whatever the case, do just what Shep said and I'll bet it will start. I've thought that its a problem with the key switch not sending power to the relay to activate it, but I'm too lazy to change out the switch, and it only happens occasionally, and its just an old beater to drive to work.

I once had a Gardner Denver towable air compressor.I tuned it up using Champion spark plugs.. It started one time with no problem..After that it chugged and wanted to start. but it just wouldn't start. After checking this and that I finally went back to the spark plugs.. I bought a set of Motorcraft sparkplugs. and it started first time every time.. I tossed those new Champions away.....

Have an 86 F-250 ford farm truck that does this every so often too. Just for no reason you go out to start it and nothing happens exept you crank and crank until the battery is dead and no fire. Mine has always been the fuel pump relay. Open the hood and look on the drivers side clear to the fire wall. On the fire wall there is a black plastic top screwed in there with two relays under it. Now my friends 85 doesnt have anything in the fire wall his is loose on the fender well, so you may have to look around a little. Anyway what you are looking for is a relay about 1 inch cube that is green. I normally tap on the relay a little and then go and start the truck, or unplug it and plug it back in and then the truck starts. That tells me the problem and then I have to go get another at advance or wherever.

This relay controls the electric fuel pump in the truck. When you first turn the key on you will hear the fuel pump build up pressure and then cut off. If you turn the key on and listen under the truck and dont hear the pump build pressure, the relay is bad.

Try that and see what happens

Good Luck

Sounds like it might be water in the gas. Condensation will build up if you don't do somnething. Suggest pouring a can of dri-gas in in the tank. If it's real cold then use HEET and let it set a spell that should melt the ice and get rid of the water.
