Let me start by stating that I just found this terrific resource yesterday, and appreciate the all the information available here. Raised in Detroit, but now living in East Texas, I find myself, an ignorant city boy, trying to make it in the big country!

Although I only have 2 1/2 acres to mow, I'm frustrated at buying new "toy" riding mowers every 2 or 3 years, and am interested in getting a real piece of equipment that will last as long as I do.

Although we are still clearing some of our property, eventually we will hope to have a smooth enough "lawn" to need a finish mower. Also, I work away from home much of the time, so my wife does much of the mowing, so we need a very reliable machine that is fairly easy to operate. The reason I think we want a belly mower, is for ease of mowing close to structures, trees, etc., and minimize backing up.

An older tractor, with some "personality" that would be a good restoration project is a favorable, as well. We are also looking for good flexibility for adding implements, such as front end loaders, and of course, PTO devices.

Thank you in advance for any recommendations, or help you can provide.

Richard

I have a 1981 model 650 John Deere compact diesel, with almost 1400 hrs on it, did replace a piston in it once. NEVER use ETHER in them!!!! Aalso had the injection pump rebuilt this summer, but other than that have done very little in the way of repairs, just mantainence on it. Like the size, the 8 fwd transmission, and differential lock. Guess the one shortfall is the lack of a live pto. I added power steering on it to use with a loader. I use it with a 5' Mott flail mower and love it. The flail mower takes less power to pull, and does not throw rocks, sticks and other things like the rotary and finish type mowers do. Would have to say that this Yanmar Manufactured John Deere is a tough one. Gene Davis

Try looking on TractorBuyNet.com. That is the place for compact tractor information. That being said, the posts below gave you some very good ideas. However, if your wife is going to use it, like my wife does, I would go with a newer compact tractor. Most of these tractors are set up for many different attachments, such as loaders, tillers, mowers, etc. You will probably want one with power steering and hydrostatic transmission. There are many brands to choose from, I can speak from experience that Kubota,Case, and New Holland have just about any size you want, very good parts supply, and are very dependable.Hope this will help you out. Bob.

We have an IH 185 Cub Low-boy which like the others have said is built very tough and should last forever however it is not a fast mower and in not the most user friendly machine. Since you say mowing will be it's main job I would give a good look to a commercial duty zero turn mower like a Dixie Chopper or Grasshopper. One of these mowers should last a very long time and will cut your mowing time in half compared to a simular sized tractor and belly mower. Last summer we tried out an Arien's 22hp 50" deck commercial duty zero turn mower, with our Cub Lowboy it took 2 hours to mow our lawn as well as a solid hour doing trim work with a push mower but even with a smaller deck the zero turn did it all in less than an hour and a half while doing a better job. I realize a tractor would have more options such as a front end loader but there are a number of options for the zero turn mowers such as front blades.

Richard: The IH Cub is one of the most popular tractors for this application, with good reason: excellent maneuverability, reasonable power, easy to get parts for, and good visibility. I love my '58 Cub for mowing--I've got about 1 1/2 acres, and it's just the right size. I use a 5' finish mower (belly mount) on mine, though that's at the upper limit for the Cub's horsepower, particularly if I don't keep on top of the mowing. Other good choices are Farmall A's and Super A's, the Farmall B, and even the C and Super C. All are well-engineered tractors, and will work well for what you have in mind. Moving up the Farmall food chain, the newer models--130, 140, 230, 240, etc. are even better--they're a bit newer but basically the same tractor. Other tractors to consider are the small Fords (8N, 9N, and 2N), and the smaller Case, Massy-Ferguson, and similar. All can be adapted to work with belly mowers, and all have proven records of reliability.

can't beat a Farmall or International Cub for what you want. I would get a newer one late 60's or 70's. Any one would be good though from 48 on. The newer ones have 12v system, distributors and more power if you get a late model. One point hitch is very handy. I run a 60" Woods on my 76 model which is tired. However have run it on 54 which has been rebuild and it is not happy with it in heavy grass. So now run a 42" brush cutter on the 54. my opion for what it is worth

I have a late '70's International 154 with a 59" Woods finish mower. It's a belly mower. I have had the tractor for about 5 years and mow about 5 acres regularly with out any trouble. I don't have a 3-point hitch for mine but there are some out there. I did buy a snow/dozer blade last fall and I used it to move 41 tons of stone as a base for my new barn with no trouble what ever. It moves snow pretty well too but that's not a concern in Texas...

There are a lot of older tractors that can have belly mowers on them like the cub farmalls, the Allis b,c, even some of the old JDs and if you don't mind doing a little work on them they can be fun to restore and even work and if you look around you should be able to find one for less then you pay for a rideing lawn mower. Cubs sell for $1000 up to around $3000 inworking order in my area and are good little tractors and even if you would want to resale them you could get you money back

You are using good judgement in the fact that a tractor will outlast several of the smaller lawn mower types. Although not every tractor is adapted to handle a belly mower, in that case you can do as I have done and bought a finish mower( which connects to my 3 point hitch on a J.D. 970)as I don't have the front PTO and it would cost around $1800 to buy one for it. I think Woods do have some mowers for certain tractors that the belly mower does run off the rear PTO.These are some things you would need to check into before buying the tractor.( as to what tractors Woods mowers will work on).
