Last two years I worked on a tractor and spent a bushel on it and couldn;t wait to get it to a tractor show. The temperature was about 95 degrees all day and I hated to leave my tractor and just about burned up.I didn't find the tractor show business very exciting but I did enjoy talking to some of the people. Most tractor shows around here don't even give any awards or the tractors aren't judged.I'm as prowd of my tractor as I can be but What's the purpose of the shows?

I could have written what you just said and I've been showing for 20 years. I was really into it at first and so was my wife but as time went on it seems that we enjoy it less. I believe I can get along with most and like all brands but in my area its acontest to see who can get the biggest motorhome or fifth wheel and largest shade canopy. When the sun gets high they all get in their clicks and pretend your're not there. If your a new comer you don't fit in. I only feel welcome if I bring something thats especially interesting and I only have one like that. Sorry if I sound like a downer but after all this time I have not had one local person invite me over for a beer and I am always extending my hospitality. I have been restoring for 20 years and I don't have one good friend in this hobby. Oh sure we all visit, but when the guy with more or shinier than me shows up they walk away in mid sentence. Thanks I think I needed this.

Thanks for replying. As I thought about it more, I remembered something that happeaed awhile ago...Our state chapter was featured at a local show and the buzz was that we would have 200 displays of our color there. When the other color got wind, they made sure they had more than 200 displays and got there extra early to stake out the choice spots. Just to prove how rude they were.

I got the tractor bug in 1997,even though I didnt have any restored tractors, most of our old tractors were still working doing some odd job, plowing a garden, bushogging a feild for the neighbor,or something.Well, paw dies in 1999 so I decided Id fix up his ole M,but lacking the knowledge and experience, and the shop and tools to do the job, I asked a guy that we knew who restored tractors to help me and Id pay him what he thought was fair.Well after 7 months of long evenings and three day weekends she was done.I joined the same tractor club he was in and in May of 2000 we had our club show.I had invited some friends who are Shriners,to bring their little pulling garden tractors and were for the most part nice all day. Then the president of the club complained about them selling tickets to raffle a pedal tractor. One guy got mad and chewed her out.She came up[ to me and told me if I was going to invite those "kind of people",I wasnt welcome in their club.Havent seen any of them since!

Good day folks,

I couldn't have said it any better than the fine folks who posted before me. We have a show here in southern Ohio each August and it is always a great one. That show was one of the reasons I got started on tractors and farming. We also have a few folks who sit around under their shade makers but not too many. That's the one thing that I dislike most about our show. I love to meet other old tractor guys like myself but it seems like you can never find any of them. Kind of disappointing actually. The best time comes before and after the daily parade during the show. That's the time I get to meet more of the other folks there. Good people that's for sure. Now, we also have a little care show on the Sunday of our show and they do buy trophies for those folks but I think they should set it up the same as for our section. They'd have more fun too. We also have an antique tractor pull on the Saturday of our show. They used to have trophies and such years back (one of our directors told me a while back) but they had trouble with the big pullers comin in and basically takin over. So, a few years back they dropped the prizes and made it a fun pull. You know, that pull starts at 9am and runs clear till 5 or later because there are so many guys in it. It is great. I pulled my farmall A in it the first year I went. They all kind of shook their heads when I pulled up but by george it pulled it right down the track and got me third place in the class. Of course, this year I pulled my J.D. R and won the class this time. But oh what fun. I love spendin the days before the show gettin my tractors out of the field, cleaning them up, and touchin up any paint dings so they're shined up and ready for the show. There's nothing better. Thanks for bringin up some wonderful memories folks. God bless.

I never take a tractor to a show where tractors are judged. (And I have some that would win anywhere)

We have some competition shows around here and from what I've seen you have to be in the main click to win anything. I am only 21 so they kind of shun me but thats OK. I win stuff in the tractor rodeo every year. Those old guys can't keep up with a young buck. HA HA! I acually preffer shows that don't give awards. We have a show that gives you a dash plaque and a packet of show stuff and we are all happy. Everybody has a different level of craftsmanship and some are better than others, but some people spend alot of time on tractors. It takes me about a month to 2 months to fully restore a tractor providing I have all of the parts. Shows without awards don't make people mad because they didn't win anything. They usually have more stuff to do during the day anyhow. Even the tractor rodeo doesn't have awards, and there are more people in that rodeo just to have fun than there are at the one that gives awards. Also the shows without awards don't have to spend as much to put on a show so they can lower the gate fee or add something to the show to make it better. It is always a good feeling to get an award but the more people you get to talk to and admire your tractor and all it's glory is by far worth more than a ribbon.

I can't think of many "competition" shows around my area. Most of the people that I show with just enjoy each others' company and the chance to "socialize" with plain-old-common tractor folk, the best kind of folks in the world.

I go to shows to rub shoulders with all the othr nice people. Nothin better than draggin up a folding chair and visiting 'bout the "old times"
Some guys use a shade over their tractor but I get to wandering around and seldom get back to mine.

Around here (West TN ) I can think of very few if any shows that are judged. For the most part the tractor in the show itself are just a good excuse for people to get together and talk for a while. I have to admit there are times I have been bored at a show too but usually not for long. You get to meet new friends and learn alot about other tractors and sometimes even your own.

Most of the people or clubs that sponser these shows are wanting to show the younger generation how things were done years ago and the equipment it was done with. Keeping history alive I believe is how I have heard it explained.

There are shows that are judged and if you like that atmosphere I think it is great. I tend to shy away from those just because there is too much work involved getting everything just perfect for the judges. I had rather just sit and tell a few lies ( yes that happens alot too but their harmless ones) and enjoy the good company of others. Heck a tractor show is about like a whole history lesson of the area you are in and the people around that area and not just tractors.

Well I have rambled on I guess. I guess tractor shows have several purposes. Bringing good people together, keeping farming history alive, and just making a good reason to sit and do nothing for a day.

BTW, what part of the country are you in and what tractor do you have? I live in West Tn and although I mainly show and Oliver RC 77 we have most any major brand ( hehe we're not color specific here... hahaha!)

Some people don't have many other things to do with there tractor but go to shows. That is one of the places they can go and meet people with the same instrust. My poor old tractor gets worked to much to take it to any shows. I did take my Power Wagon to 5 shows in a row and placed in all of them and it was a blast meeting people who also worked on old trucks too. I will have to wait till summer to go to another one just to much snow to have one around here. Mark H.
