New to antique tractors. Info. on any of these questions would help. I have an oppurtunity to buy 1942 Farmall A, complete, sickle bar, new tires and a crack in the block. $100.00. The owner tried J.B. weld and eventualy failed. Without seing it, how much success can be had fixing that? Also, how available are parts and implements? What are the primary uses for this model? Any good websites? I am looking to move snow, cut grass/brush and general yard/farm work.

I have a 46, B model Farmall with a cracked block. I cleaned out the crack with a very stiff rotary brush and a half inch drill and washed it off with alcohol. After letting it dry completely I put a layer of JB weld on the crack. I let it set for a day or two, not because of the JB weld but because I was busy otherwise. I fired up the engine and drove the tractor five miles to the ranch, mowed 2 1/2 acres and drove it five miles back to the house. It still doesn't leak. My crack is on the left side of the block just below the head and is about 13 inches long. When I overhaul the tractor I'll have the crack welded. In the meantime I'll keep sealing it with JB weld when ever it leaks.

Where's it at? If its not too far from SE SD, buy it and leave it set. Let me know when you get it bought, I'll come & get it & you can triple your money. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
