i have 2 SMD-TA's and one runs on both gas and diesel and the other only runs on diesel, the one that runs, which is for sale for $4500, runs on gas with a fireing order of 1-2-4-3, and a shop manual that i have says they are to have a firing order of 1-3-4-2, but it won't run with that firing order, and i'm trying to figure out why my other m-ta won't start on gas, i have the wires set up to fire at 1-2-4-3, i can get it to hit but not run, can anyone help me figure out why it won't start on gas, they are both identical ignition systems but the one won't run on gas. thanks for any help, jason

FIRST OFF CHECK TO MAKE SURE YOUR BATTERY IS SPINNING IT FAST ENOUGH. ALSO CHANGE THE PLUGS AND CLEAN THE CARBURATOR. CLEAN AND REGAP YOUR POINTS ALSO, REMEMBER THERE IS NO THROTTLE ON THE GAS SIDE AND THE IGNITION HAS TO BE IN TOP SHAPE TO RUN IT. ALSO ALITTLE BIT OF DIRT WILL TOTALLY SCREW UP THAT CARB. TRY GIVING IT HALF CHOKE OR LESS WHEN STARTING. THEY ARE FIGITY OLD BIRDS AND A PAIN IN THE REAR END TO GET RIGHT BUT ONCE YOU DO TWO CRACKS AND SHELL BE OFF AND RUNNING.

If you are really serious and want to set it up or check it out yourself, just consider the order of valve operation and then remove the valve operation cover(s) and follow the sequence through. Put the plug leads in their appropriate outlets and away you go! Simple as that.

The distributer or magneto turns counter clockwise on an MD

I have a Ferguson to-20 that I made up plug wires for when I got it and it ran but backfired thru the carb and missed...but ran. After switching the two middle wires it ran fine. Fred OH
