I just picked up a 1959 Hough Payloader Hu with a cab to use for the driveway and lifting things around the homestead. Serial number 14c-2360. I need to know more about this monster. I am a novice to tractors but have a strong mechanical background. Does the hydraulic tank also supply fluid to the transmission? How do I make sure there is enough fluid in the transmission? I believe that it is the power shift model. It has a gas Hercules motor, most likely stock. What size in cubic inches is it? What are the recommended fluids for the planetaries, transfer case, transmission, differentials, and hydraulics? There appears to be a pedal missing on the far left on the floor, What was it? I have a gas peddle on the right then a brake rt and a brake lt. Any idea what the side engine panel covers looked like? I would like to have a set. Anybody have any? Does anyone make them? Would like to get a non-cracked exhaust manifold. ANYONE REPOWER THEIRS LATELY AND NEED TO GET RID OF PARTS? What were the original colors? Not sure if mine has been repainted or not. Anything else that I should know or check periodically? I want to give this machine the care it deserves. I used to be Uncle bulldozer Now I am Uncle Payloader.

Thanks for your time Bill

I had one of thoses a few years back, and yes only one tank for tran, hyd system or at least that was how mine was. Mine was repowered with a Chev 250 6 cylinder. But sold it because it wasa pain in the #$%^. Does your steer from the rear, does your have 3 levers at the hyd. controls if it does the midde one shifts it in and out of 4 wheel drive. Mine had them on theright side 2 big levers and one small one the small one was the 4 wheel drive lever. Hope this helps and feel free to ask me more I'll tell you all I can

Why was yours a pain in the #$%^? I have those levers all figured out. My question was referring to the floor pedal layout. What did yours look like? Yes mine is a rear steer, a little tricky but easy enough to get used to. How did a chevy end up bolting to the transmission? Any idea on what grades of fluids to use? Can you mix hydrualic fluids? Red colored with clear? What type of fluid did you use in your transmission/hydraulic system? Atf or hydraulic fluid?

Thanks Bill

My machine was a pain because it had no brakes and was just to big and weak to do a lotof things plus if it set for a couple weeks it leaked all the hyd. fluid out. As far as the type of fluid I used 303 tractor fluid that I got at Orielly's auto parts worked fine. As far as the chev someone before me had a thing made that bolted on to the flywheel and that hooked to the drive shaft. The guy I got it from would go out and buy acheap chev engine and run it to death in that machine, and when it quit just drop in another.

My brakes are gone to. Well it has to be better than a farmall or 9n for lifting. I cant rely on the neighbor all the time either. Brakes look pretty straight forward like a big truck. I am thinking about trying a universal transdraulic fluid. Is there some sort of hydraulic fluid filter in there somewhere?

The fluid you are thinking about is the same as the 303 I used. Also there was a filter on my machine back by the engine in a canister looking thing. The pedels on my hough where gas and brake. I know what you mean about useing smaller tractors I have 2 with loaders on them and also a 950 Cat loader so the hough was just not needed anymore
