Does anybody know why the steering likes to lock on 730 J.D.'s. I've heard it's fairly common but never why. Ours has came close to killin me several times over the years, besides almost taking out the side of the barn and a few corner posts.

There can be problems up under the hood with the valve that is operated by a pin that moves on either side of center io a ramp, depending on which way the steering wheel is rotated. The "ramp" or pin that moves in contact with the "ramp" may wear, or become loose.

Another common problem is down in the front of the steering unit, near the bottom front of the radiator. There is a vane "motor" that surrounds the steering shaft, and tugs the shaft along, in one direction, or the other, dependant upon the flow of oil from the previously mentioned valve. There is a stationary vane, pinned to the housing, and a moveable vane that is attached to the vertical steering shaft with a couple of bolts. The bolts are known to break, and the vane wedges in the housing. You have to take out the bolts that are in a circle around this housing, and lift of the whole top of the steering mechanism to check this out.

Mark you need to ask that on the John Deere site. on that site a lot of people have asked about the same thing.

My 70 used to do the same thing after it was rebuilt from a fire (leaky gas cap without an anti splash tube in the tank).

Not sure what was done at the time to correct it, I was only 15 at the time and wasn't around for the repair.

I have talked to a few others knowledgable on the subject as it now turns hard one way easy the other.

What I have been told, and can stand to be correct, is the spool isn't centered. What I do know to attempt or at least start the process (what we did with the mechanic anyway) is jack up the front end so there is no load on the steering and loosen the housing where the steer shaft comes into. Lightly tap back and forth till the unit self centers itself. If it is off (going from memory here) it will self turn one direction or the other.

I have also been told of a bushing that might be out for the hard steering part, but I don't have a service manual outlining the R & R.

Hope this helps for a start.

Bruce
