Hi everyone,

You gave me a quick response about my tractor being a 240 Utility 1958 model. You said they also made a 340 1858 also.

This message concerns my son's tractor, another 240 Utility. I first thought it had to be the pump, but we put my new pump on it and it definately is not the pump. My hydralic had to run for about 20 to 30 minutes before it would lift and begin working. An engineer told me what was the matter with mine, the pump. My son's does the same thing, has to run some 30 minutes, but after that, the only way it will lift is to give it full throtle to get it to work at all. It also gives a noise like it is straining to work even when it is working.

When I bought my tractor several years ago, it would not lift at all. I went in under the seat and opened up that section and found a bad o-ring. I replaced that and it worked perfect. My son also went in under the seat and found no problem there. It definately has to be the piston or a problem with the system under the gas tank (in front of the battery).

Can anyone tell what you think the problem may be? Our next goal it to look inside the piston. I have rebuilt mine twice. Does this sound like a problem with the piston or under the gas tank system? Thanks! As I said before: Good Tractors!!!

With that system, nine times out of ten the problem is in what they call the Saftey/Regulator valve. Like your 240, most IH tractors in the late '50's used a positve displacement pump and closed-center control valves. This means that the pump produces a constant flow of oil, and since the valves are closed-center, oil cannot flow through them when they are in neutral. To solve this problem, the Saftey/Regulator valve dumps the flow from the pump back to the reservior when the control valves are in neutral. If it sticks open, you don't get any oil to the control valves. You need to rebuild the Saftey/Regulator valve, which is very easy to do. This valve is located under the gas tank on my Farmall 240 Row-Crop. It has a square cover held on by four bolts. Remove the valve from the tractor. Remove two of the bolts that hold on the cover, and install longer bolts, because there is a heavy spring pushing against the cover. Remove the other two bolts, then carefully remove the long bolts you just installed. After you get the cover off, you'll see what looks like a small plug that you can remove with a flat screwdriver. Remove it and you will find that it is a screen. This is called the orfice screen. Get a new one from Case-IH. Replace the o-ring on the regulator valve piston, get a new cover gasket, replace any other o-rings that were disturbed while removing the valve, change hyd. fluid and filter, and you should be ready to go. I would highly reccomend that you get a Parts Manual, because it shows a very detailed exploded view of this valve. An I&T Service Manual might also show this valve.

Hi. Thanks for your response. I am the son who owns the IH 240 Utility.

The problem has in fact been diagnosed as having a bad "control valve assembly". Further, we have located this part but its on a Farmall (year unknown). Wouldn't this work on my tractor? As soon as I confirm this I'll get the part and get it installed.

Much thanks for all your help and advice.

Get with a IH dealer parts man, who will take the time to help you a little. The suction filter has had an update and now uses late part # filter inserts. Buy the update parts, change the filters, change the oil, and most of all, pay close attention to the cover, cover gasket, and the bolts. Clean out the holes with a tap, remove any burrs from cover and case face, install cover and bolts with even tightness. Been there, and went through this with my IH 340 U

Since you have 2 of these tractors, for goodness sake spring for some money and buy 3 manuals: Operator, Repair, and Parts.

I have an I-240 Utility. I will do what I can to help.
To begin, I'm a little confused. I don't know of any model I-240 Utilities with any hydraulic components under the seat. The hydraulic system consists of a pump mounted on the right side of the engine, resevoir and valve assemblies under the gas tank. Additional options are things like fast hitch and power steering. The hydraulic pump is really under sized if you add a loader. If you want to effectively operate a loader, you need to mount a separate front pump for the loader.
To get back to your problem, assuming your are referring to the orginal equipment hydraulic system, you haven't mentioned anything about the hydraulic filter or screen. Have you check this filter?
Email if you are interested in further discussion.
Good Luck,
Kent
