Long live the 236 perky!! Or any perkins for that matter!! Just curious why so many think the 540 v8 is such a bad motor? In my experience they have been one of the most reliable v8 diesels made.

Had an Allis Chalmers 715 TLB with a Perkins engine 4-236 I think. Absolutely no problems, Very popular engine and parts are available everywhere.

I have a 6 cylinder Perkins on my Long R9500. The tractor sat for 4 - 5 years. All I did was replace the fuel filters, drain off the old fuel, put a new battery in it, checked all the other fluids, and the tractor fired right up after we bleed the injectors off. The motor is VERY strong, reliable, and if I ever buy another tractor, I want a Perkins motor in it.

You can see a pic of it in the photos - search under Long.

Hope this helps.

Very good engines. Just an example, my neighbour had 2 International tractors, one was a 68 engine hp 574, fitted with a 4 cylinder IH 239 engine. the other was a 475, 62 engine hp 4 cylinder Perkins 212 engine. ( at first glance they looked the same tractor, same tyres, similar weight etc) he told me the 475 left the 574 standing. My MF 168 (66 hp Perkins ) used to blind our 78 hp 674 International.

What was the 540 in?? I thought the 1150 series used the 510 and the later ones the 640; and that they were good engines.

I would take a perky anytime; durable and snappy. Of course, some folks can find the weak spot in a hammer and anvil.

510 perkins used in the 1150 mf
540 perkins used in the 1150-2745 mf
640 perkins used in the 2775-2805 mf
and of course different combines as well.
the v-8 perkins was not actually a bad motor, just the same as any other model motor from cat, cummins, and john deere. the v-8 motors just are not as good as the inline sixs
