After 30 years I've decided to replace my Ford 2N with something newer; I want good brakes, power steering, full time hydraulics on a frame not much larger than my present tractor. I am seriously considering a Ford 3000 (gas) with a conventional gear transmission. It looks good with 3620 hours on engine (not rebuilt). I will pay a mechanic to check over compression, etc. The price is $6350 for this '69 tractor. I would appreciate advice from someone who knows Ford tractors on what I should watch for when buying this model tractor--special problems, etc associated with this model and size Ford. Thanks for any advice you can give. Chuck

I have a 1970 gas fired with an 8 speed tranny and remote hyd. Best tractor I've ever owned. Inherited it from my Father with 570 hours and have worked it heavy. Still goes season to season with out adding any oil. Replaced the water pump and wiring harness. Will soon need a clutch in a year or two. You won't be sorry, if it has been well cared for.

I have 1973 ford 3000 2300 hrs with front loader.
Original owner. The only mechanical part I changed is the water pump. Never had any problems.

Chuck,
My thinking was the same as yours is. I wanted something a little more modern but I didn't want it a whole lot bigger than my 46 2N.
After looking for over a year, this fall I bought a 1965 2000. It's a LOT more tractor than an N.
2000 and 3000 are the same size, just yours has a little more HP.
Your price seems a little high though.
I paid $4500 for mine with 2150 original hours.
I did not get live PTO or PS or any attatchments with it.
But it had always been shedded and looks nearly new.
Keep looking I'd say. Your tractor is out there.
You might also consider a Ferguson TO35. I saw one yesterday. Not much bigger than an N but has LPTO and PS. Real nice tractor.
Funny but after looking for a year for my Ford and expecting to have to drive some thousands of miles to fetch it I found this one practically in my back yard. I drove it home when I bought it.
Good luck
Jerry

I've got Ford 3000 diesel and like it a lot. Last year I hooked up a flat rack wagon with sides and got some compost at the local landfill. I netted 6000 lbs. and the tractor only weighs about 4000 but it pulled it up a hill (not real steep) and home about 10 miles. I needed lots of braking room as the load was a little too heavy for safety, but the tractor has lots of guts. I think the gas would probably be OK too.
My PTO is tough to engage and I have a leak in the rear main but as far as running....its real good. I paid around $7200 a few years ago. I live in southern Ontario.

I ran across a 3000 with a ford loader through my brother-in-law. He was selling it for an estate. I got mine for $3500. I know I got a steal. I had some fuel problems, flushed the gas tank and put a new fuel pump on it. I was swearing alot during that job. I then bought a posthole digger and thats when I found out the PTO clutch didn't work. I think the previous owner never used a PTO implement. That was $500 but I was able to split the tractor and do it myself. I love mine. If it sits for a while it will start hard.Other than that I think your making a good choice. Not to big, it does not take up too much space and much nicer than the 8N I had. Good luck

I ran a 3000 a couple of times before, and I think that they would be worth that much. I never had any problems with it when I was rolling with it at our last tractor pull. I would like to own one someday, but I have to get the money around.

Chuck, 3000 Fords were fantastic tractors. As far as doing real work, there is no way to compare them with an 8n Ford, because they (8n)s
were only about two steps ahead of a mule. A plug of a mule at that. You will be pleased with the difference, however the price sounds a little high. Just keep in mind that you will be able to get about half that amount, once you get it planted in your wife's driveway. Best of luck. alvinnms

I would agree with Roy on the issues of the brakes and front end. If you are just getting a tractor to replace your 2N than a 3000 would be a great choice. Beside the Power steering and more horse power, you have the options of live PTO, hyraulics, differential lock and choice of gas & dsl. I would recommend you look get a 8 speed Hi-lo trans, this would give you more options. (ie pulling a tiller). I would recommend that you hook up to a bush hog and run the PTO and lift it up. One of the best test for a tractor, Test hydraulics & motor & PTO. Good luck

Chuck;
The 3000's are good units with features you will really like after using the 2N. How ever brakes are not one of their strong points. They used the same basic drum system your 2N has. The next larger size chassis 4000-4600 used much better wet brakes and have a better front axle if a loader is in your future. It remains a pretty big step up size-wise from the 2N to a 4000 size unit. Good luck in your search. Roy

What every one says is true and that price is high. I guess the weak points on the 3000 model was the lucas electrical system and they don't have cyl. sleeves so if its worn out you would have to have it bored.
