The game between the Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadians is just over. The Oilers won 2-0. Goals scored by Ken Linesman and Marty McSorley.
The regular season game between the same two teams is just starting. Weather is -19Canadian degrees(thats about 0 US degrees), but no wind or snow. 53,000 shivering fans in stadium. One fan(?) wearing only a T-shirt and one sock took a run across the ice. Was tackled by security.

In an article in the Montreal Gazette newspaper one of the sports writers mentioned that the idea for an outdoor game was proposed by Oiler Kevin Lowe. This player is native to my hometown of Lachute, Quebec. His father was co-owner of Lowe Bros. Dairy. Behind the dairy plant the Lowes senior always had a NHL size outdoor rink. All of the local kids and especially the farmers kids were invited and taught the skills of skating and hockey. Just last week Kevin Lowe's mother died; his father this past August. Many players now and of days gone by in the NHL have spent time on the L0we Bros. Dairy ice at Lachute.

Ain't Marty McSorley the joik that whacked that guy in the head with his stick a couple years ago when he was with the Bruins or was that somebody else?
When I was in college, I was a rabid hockey fan. Never missed a game and we had a good team (UNH). They still do. Always ranked near the top.
There was nobody like Bobby Orr. Never will be again, IMHO. I once saw him kill a penalty all by himself.

Your right, Les, same guy, just older and hopefully wiser.
Orr was a great player.
If your UNH means University of New Hampshire, then a daughter of my neighbor up here in Alberta, is an assistant coach of the womans team there. I believe she attended that school and played for them as a student.

Yup. UNH = University of New Hampshire. And that doesn't surprise me a bit. When I was a student there (65-69) we had a lot of Canadian hockey players and I'm sure they still do. A lot come from Mass, too.
One of my classmates was Michael Ontkean. He was there on a hockey scholarship. You may remember him better as an actor. He was in The Mod Squad along with other things I can't recall.
A fellow forestry student was Graham Bruder. He was a defenseman from up in Quebec somewhere. Wicked nice guy.
