My 8N has a Delco Alternator. The voltage sens circuit is connected to the Bat terminal. The field circuit go to the coil where it is connected to the swith side terminal through a small flat device. The device is about 1 1/4 " by 3/4" buy 3/8". What is it? My alternator will not start to charge until I touch this device? The connections are clean and tight. Thanks!

Thanks for all the tips. I did some more research and learned a bit about alternators. I replaced the device mentioned above with simple 12volt 15 amp indicator lamp. I went from field terminal to lamp and from lamp to ignition switch on circuit. Fortunately I already had a hole in the dash with a chrome cover and the lamp fit right there. Now when I turn on the switch the lamp lights. At about 800 RPM the alternator kicks in, the lamp goes out and ammeter reads normal. After that RPM doesn't matter.

Ray put an ohm meter across it if its a diode it will show high resistance one way and low when you reverse the leAds--a resistor shud read the same both ways. John

Sounds like a diode it lets current pass in only one way. Also sounds like it is going bad, youcan buy new ones at radio shack for a couple bucks. You just ask for a high amp 12volt diode. hope this helps

Better still get a diode with about at least a 100V rating, will last longer.

It wouldn't be the 12 to 6 volt ceramic resistor????

Yes it could well be a resistor. Can't tell without looking and not familiar with that tractors electrical system.
