Hello,

I am looking into buying a set of tire chains for my tractor and found them to be fairly expensive. Has anybody tried making their own instead of buying them? It doesn't seem like it would be that difficult. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

John

I made a set for a JD loader a few years ago. Took several hours of cutting and welding all the chain together, but it was lots cheaper than buying new.

I used 1/4" chain, started by measuring outside circumference of the tire, and cut 2 sections of chain that length. Next, measure width of tire and subtract 1". This is the lenght you will cut all of your cross chains. Mine just go straight across the tire, they don't connect to each other or criss-cross. Obviously you may prefer another pattern. Next, lay everything out on the floor and start welding. I had to deflate my tires to get the chains on tight enough to suit me. I hooked them together using threaded chain links from the local farm store. Once the tire was aired up, the chains became tight and worked great. Used the loader in a water treatment pond removing lime on a concrete pad. Without the chains it was slick as snot, but the chains made it like dry pavement.

When I bought my Chains for my 18.4 X 16.1 tires I found these new ones to be the cheapest aroud even with shipping. They were 184.00 a set and weight allmost 200 lbs. That is a lot of chain to buy! Check these guys out. Mark H.

Might sound crazy but I bought four car tire chains for each tire, these are the kind that loop through the wheel and over the tire, for about $6.00 each. With four, evenly spaced, on each rear tire I can go through the snow with no problem, I use them for plowing with my Cub.

My problem is I need chains the whole winter and they have to be good to last. I have worn thru some befor and broke links on them at the wrong time. The links on these are 3/8 inch thick. I checked in town and they wanted over 375.00 for the same chains! They are a bugger to put on weighing 100 lbs each. Mark H.

I bought a pallet of used truck chains at an equipment auction for $50.00 & made several sets of truck & tractor chains from them. Those special plairs for spreading & closing links (about $4) are a great investment.

I just bought a set of duo-grips for my tractor today (13.6 X28). Get a friend to help when you go to pick them up. Mine weighed 160 pounds.

Measure just how many feet you will need - you'll be surprised. Then how do you connect the chains? Connectors aren't cheap either. You'll be at near the same price when you are done, unless you are saying you have a bunch of old chain lying around.

Auctions are a good place to find them cheap, get 2 pair & make a good set.

I picked up a pair for my H Farmall at an auction, the good heavy criss-cross design, they showed very little, if any wear. I think I gave somewhere around $20 to $25 dollars.

You could try going to your local road dept. and see if you could pick up a set of road grader tire chains, they replace them on and off and use a couple sets to make your self a set for your tractor. That is how I got the ones I have. Hope this helps

Where are you located, and what size do you need? I may be able to help you with a used set, as I have several. Also, watch at auctions. I bought a set of heavy field and road chains that fit a 4020 JD that were brand new with the tag still on them for $50.00 this Spring. The price tag was $599.95

Aaron,

I'm located in South West Michigan. The tire size is 13.6 X 38.

How much do you want for a set? Are they worn very much? What style are they, Duo-grip or ladder style? Any idea what shipping would cost?

John
