I was wondering if any knows why ford went to the piston style pump after 1954. I have a 1954 with a vane pump that works good till the weather gets cold. Then you have let it run and rev. it up to get it to prime.

I don't know the exact reason for the change other than the vane pumps were proving to be troublesome. Maybe you're experiencing the reason first-hand. The change was made just prior to the end of the '55 model year at serial number 66849.*

All the pumps that were installed under the operators feet, in the belly, are piston type. Ford went external in 1953, mostly because of a patent infringment lawsuit with Harry Ferguson, the inventer of the three point lift system.
