What age were you when you first drove a tractor? What make and model tractor was it, and what was the job you were doing with it? I first used an Allis Chalmers CA with a side delivery rake when I was about ten years old. After that hay season, I used the front end loader on it extensively for the rest of the time we had the tractor.

City boy, mostly, though small town. Turned 15 and went to work at a hog confinement, with some cropland. At our unit, we had a small (20 hp?) AC 4WD with loader, blade, live hyd and PTO. Man, thought I was some kinda farmer. I'd do anything to drive it around, even in the worst weather, when all I could do was "pretend" to blade snow with that little 5' blade...

Then, the new owner bought a 1566 IH and I could really do some work, thought all I really got to do was auger corn and do some chisel plowing for the irrigation area. I've wished forever that I'd bought that little AC. It was a keeper.

Bought my own 560 Farmall about 5 years ago and work it to death, just playing around. 50 acres and 5000 trees to mow around. Used it to backfill new foundation and have moved WAY too much dirt with that poor old girl.

The first tractor I drove was a MM 1950 something that I bought for $150 from a friend. I was 15 at the time. Use it to disk fields and clear extra large brush. Had a lot of fun with it for years.

We had a JD A and an F-20, I got to steer the F-20at about 8, then when I was 9 We got the JD A and I didn't have to reach so far for the clutch.
I could start the JD A by myself, just squirt a little gas in the petcock and "hang" on the flywheel. All the neighbors had Olivers, (70's) man they looked like race cars to me! Now I've got 8 1/2 of them! Larry

I was 5 years old and going into grade 1 at school when I first drove a tracter. It was a AC WD45 with a New Holland 56 hay rake behind it. My dad road on the fender as we raked 3 rounds one sunny afternoon. When we finished we were at the far end of the farm, after disconnecting the rake drive my dad put the tracter in 3rd (I couldn't reach the peddles) and I pulled the hand clutch back. He told me I did that a little too fast! The WD45 got traded for a 180, that tracter traded for a 6060 which I still have and it stills does most of the hay raking with the same rake and all of the square baling. This was my most memorable day in my life for a long time.

I guess I around 15 or 16. Did haying during the summers and I was always bucking bales. Gal we had driving tractor dumped load 3x. I booted her off and took over until that load was out of the field. Her Dad came out and seen her stacking and blew a cork and returned her to the tractor and me on the ground.

Next time I touched a tractor I was 35. It is still my favorite - Oliver 550 in much the same shape as Super 55's rig. I have not looked back since and now have 4.

At the ripe old age of 12, my grandfather started me out with our John Deere 70 Diesel with a 3 bottom plow, and then moved me right up to our 730 Diesel with pony start and a 4 bottom. I have been hooked ever since!

I was just a pup. About 6-8 yrs old, drove a 1927 McCormick Deering 10-20, while my uncle cut sargum cane to load on the trailer. To stop the tractor all you had to do was step on the clutch. I found that that didn't work when I got into uncle's pickup. Playing around I got it out of gear and started down hill. Stepping on the clutch didn't slow me down a bit, But the black berry bushes finely got me stopped.

Drove the 1086 summer fallowing when I was about 8 I think. I wasn't supposed to, but I went with my brother to ride with him for a couple hours. He moved over and let me drive. There were a few skips in the first round...

Since then I've done pretty much everything there is to do on the farm, except spraying - can't take the chemicals...

John Deere 420 Crawler. I was probably 9 or 10, started out by just moving it from place to place on the farm. Later on I hauled the haywagon and the gathering tank for sugaring. When I was 11 I could reach the pedals on the Farmall C, and I have been driving tractors ever since. I started my kids on a JD 1010 crawler, a very good way to start because it is so slow, by the time they graduate to a wheel tractor they have gotten used to the clutch and other controls, and can pay more attention to what they are doing and where they are going.

I had two older brothers so didn't get to drive on a regular basis until a little later.

Driving the 1949 Minneapolis-Moline GTB from shock of feed to the next shock, as dad tossed bundles into the feed wagon would have come first. Probably at about age 7 or 8.

One-waying at about 12 would have been the first regular tractor driving. I usually got the short end of the stick and had to drive an LA Case. I was left handed, it had a left hand clutch lever, so everyone seemed to think it was made for me.

First solo was on a B Farmall pulling a spring tooth harrow I was about 7 [you can call them a tractor all they needed was a Hyd sys.] By the time I was 8 I was pulling a bundle wagon with the B then a Super A By 10 I was backing the H into the belt on the seperator. Started my son raking when he was about 8 on a 460D pulling left and right NH rakes. I was baling one day and my Dad was moving bales John was raking he got hung up on a electric pole I saw Dad stop and watch John started backing and jocking suddenly he took off around the pole and never left a straw John was 13 when Dad died and Dad was still talking about that.

As the name suggests, my first driving experience was on my grandfather's 1947 Ford 2N. I was too young to even remember, as I did a lot of lap riding. Still had the pacifier in! Eventually, I was allowed to take it to the house to hose off the dirt and then to disc and use the "hiller" to make rows. At some point in time, he got a farmall 140 and it was a good tractor, but that 2N was very special to me.

I have fond memories of discing and making rows in our small 5 acre garden with my grandfather standing in the middle watching me. I can only imagine what he felt. He passed away about 3 years ago and I actually instructed my sister (at 16 years old) on how to operate a tractor hauling limbs in a trailer. I have pictures and she is really proud of it. I had to beg and plead to get the tractor to stay in the family and I am now restoring it to museum quality. I have over $2250 in parts (no labor or tools) and I'm just now getting the 5000 parts back together. This tractor will never leave me, and I hope to learn my kids and grandkids on it someday. I'm 23 now and that's a ways off, but wishful thinking!

The summer I turned 15, I got to drive a JD 730 LP. I only got to drive it a week or so then I got "demoted" to a 720 LP. They're very similar tractors, but while the 730 was a nice tractor, the 720 was flat wore out. I was running water furrows with them. Later, I got to be one of the big shots, when I got to drive the 4020, pulling a disk.

Minnie Mo UTU at age 5 or 6. The neighbor who farmed the land in back of my house would let me perch on the seat and steer while he worked the (hand) clutch and jumped off periodically to load rocks onto the stone boat. 50 years later I now own that very tractor. Didn't realize it until afterward that I had purchased it from a nephew of the original owner. Makes that old Minnie special to me now...

My family started farming when I was 11. The first tractors I drove were a Case Model C, Farmall F-20, and a Farmall H. Hauling wagons during harvest, plowing, disking.

The little C was probably the one that I drove and hated the most. I was not strong enough to hand crank it and with no turn brakes it was a real bear to handle in a plowed field!!

I have examples of each tractor sittin in my shop now (got them all within the past year). I have not been involved in farming for over 40 years. Of all three I guess I like the little C the best! It’s a neat little tractor and of course now I can start it!! -)

This is a picture of my C and one of my F-20's.

First tractor I drove myself was a Bolens Husky 600 at about age 7 (Dad still has it and my son is learning on it now). Moved up to the Economy Power King hauling loose hay by myself from the field to the garden around 9. Since moved on to JD 40 and 1020 with loader. Learned a lot from all these old machines as well as leanered how to get out quite a few problems myself (you know before Dad got home from work).

By the time I hit 7 or so I was driving it alone and then moved up to dad's JD 820 (3 cylinder diesel) We used to go to alot of local horse shows and I always got to disc and harrow the ring by myself before I hit ten. Talk about an ego trip! Grandaddys tractor is about 2 miles from here and i plan on getting it back and restoring it for my kids and someday grandkids.

I still can't believe some people can't get used to the smell of cow sh!t.

First driving experience- about 2 or 3 standing between my dad's legs on a '38 J.D. A. First solo at age 7 on a 9N Ford pulling a wagon while the "grown-ups" loaded square bales of hay. Then in the fall plowing with the 9N. Not allowed to drive the A solo till I was big enough to hand start it.

Age 7, raking hay very slowly with a neighobr's Farmall B, while Dad ran the hay chopper with the Farmall H. Also got to pull some hay wagons to the barn with the B for unloading. We farmed the neighbor's ground, so the B was usually available if we needed it. The next summer, he let me cultivate corn with the H while he followed along on the B to keep an eye on me. By the time I was 10, he and grandpa would let me do everything except drive the trucks on the road.

Drove a 45 M home being pulled my Dad on his 41 M.First on I drive running was his 41 M,but that wasnt long,he came home early from work and caught me on it,I was 7.First time he let me "drive" one was a 1030 Case Comfort King.Guess he thought it would be harder to flip it over.I drove it pulling some kind of harrow, dont recall what it was. After a good bit of practice,Dad told me to stop and he got off and I went by myself for a few hours, only took about 2 hrs to plow the spot I was in normally, but took me 3 or 4.I got faster as I grew older,I was about 10 at that time.

I was probably 7 or 8 when I drove my grandfathers ford Golden Jubilee hauling manure. He was the original owner having bought it new. It was hitched to his IH 100 ground drive spreader. When my grandfather retirewd in the late 60s he gave the tractor to my 2 brothers and I. Both are still in daily use on my fathers farm.

My first and I learned to drive on it was a homemade garden tractor. I was with my dad in the fields on his M farmall every minute he would let me so when I was 7, He bought a LA case to drive in the same field with him. He thought the LA would be safe for me as it had a hand clutch, single brake and big fenders to keep me from falling off/out. I used it for two seasons and it was a wonderful ole tractor except in plowed field it took forever to turn it without turning brakes!! In 1959 he bought me (and him I suppose) a brand new MF 65. I will be posting pictures sometime.

Mom has a picture of me at age 5 driving a B pulling a manure spreader with dad standing on the drawbar. I was in the field with my dad as much as I could as far back as I can remember. I was 8 when dad bought the second tractor and I started disking ground with a C Allis by myself. Before that time I would pull a trailer or wagon to feed livestock while dad would open gates. Dad was in the same field on another tractor. I was doing custom baling with an Oliver 77 by myself at age 12.

I'm also restoring a 41 model H John Deere and a B Farmall. Other tractors I have right now are a 4430, 4230, 3020 Deere and a 135 Massey. I have had another 4430 at one time and 2 4020's. I also had a 656 Farmall for just a short time as well.

Raised a city boy (OKC, OK). Moms side of the family are farmers around Vernon Texas. My first time, age about 14, my uncle place me on a JD4020 and set me to sand plowing fields. I think thats what it was called. Basicly you punch a bunch of holes in the field to keep the sandy soil from blowing away. This was a big promotion from several summers of walking cotton fields and cutting the weeds down by hand with a hoe. I think I would of told him I could fly a plane blind folded to keep from doing that. I quickly learned it may be completely frim and dry on one pass and the next (20' over) your 2' deep in a wet spot throwing mud everywhere. Also learned that if you clip one wire of electric fence you pull down all 2 miles of it.

The first tractor I drove was a one row Allis Chalmers. I don't know the model. I was seven at the time pulling loaded tobacco sleds to the barn and empties to the field. I remember I was told to only use first gear. Naturally I wondered what the others were for. I found out when I put it in third and popped the clutch. It lurched and scared the bejebbers out of me. I stayed in first after that!
