A lot of starter problems are caused by poor cable connections, wrong size replacement cables, not checking the ground cable connection to the frame. These tractors worked fine many years ago when they left the factory, so before you make major changes, check the basics. If you have replacement lugs on the battery terminals- throw them away and get decent new cables with proper ends on them. Clean the battery posts. Clean the battery ground cable where it contacts the tractor. Clean the contacts inside the starter solenoid. Charge the battery. Voila! the sucker starts!!!!! !!!

I had the same problem. I installed a 2nd battery behind the seat in the open tool box and wired it in parallel with the one in front of the seat. I ran the negative cable directly to the starter solenoid and grounded to the frame the positive terminal. I used 2 gauge cables.

I had my 350 utility converted to 12V because I was always having trouble starting- generator, battery, cables, etc. 12v uses alternator and I have had zero problems since conversion. Good luck.

Don't forget about battery cables. Most young parts counter workers do not know there is a difference in 12 volt and 6 volt battery cables. Six volt systems use a larger conductor and should be copper. Some replacement cables use alumimun. As Paul stated, don't forget about the ground circuit.

Weak battery, poor terminals or wires or grounding on the whole battery to starter system (this includes the starter key switch), or a weak starter is your problem. Get all that up to snuff & you will have a real strong starter.

I have a 300 rowcrop where the battery is under the seat. I'm not sure how the utility is built, but on the row crop they ground the battery to the flimsy battery case. Forty years of rust & dust & there is very poor grounding from the case to the tractor frame, made a world of difference when we extended a ground strap directly to the frame from the battery. Could be something that simple, or it could be a combo of all of the above.

Starters that are old some times start to drag, take it off and have a rebuilt and that will probably fix the problem. I replaced the starter on my oliver 77 last year and you wouldn't believe how much that helps. Hope this helps you

If you want to keep the original 6 volt starting system, you may need to rebuild the starter but should rebuilding the starter not help that much (and it won't if you have installed Fire Creator Pistons or other oversize higher compression pistons) you could go to a 12 volt electrical system. Use the 6 volt starter and change your generator to a 12 volt alternator and your 300 will start much easier. Don't forget to change anything that is 6 volts to 12 volts except the starter like the sealed beam lights ect. The new 12 volt battery will have to be changed to neg. ground also. Good Luck!
