Posted this in stationery engine board with no results. Maybe someone here can help. Have this Onan 24, twin cylinder engine. Starts up, runs good for about five minutes, then stalls , no spark at plugs, there is fuel at carb. Leave it sit for a few minutes starts right up again, same proceedure. Got new coil ($250.) and condenser Still does same thing. Checked for loose wiring and conections, none. Any ideas. Thanks Frank

Hi The Onan motor is on a grain auger. I don't think it has, but will check if it has a low oil shut off switch. Thanks for other imfo. Frank

I may be off base here, Does that engine have a low oil cut off, if so you could be border line on the oil level, make sure it is full. I have seen some engines do what your saying and the problem was low oil cut off. The oil drains down allowing it to start then shuts off once the level drops as the oil is on the engine surfaces. I have seen this happen on Onan RV gensets and Miller welders.

How about the ignition module under the flywheel? Or is that what you replaced? $250 for a coil? That sounds kinda pricy. We had an Onan that kept shutting off and searched and searched. Coworker removed the flywheel and someones shoestring was flapping around inside and killing it. Good luck.

It may sound crazy, but it may be the plug wires. Some Onans have a resister built into the wire. On the ones I've seen it was inside the plug boot. It's possible it could be breaking down when it gets hot and causing the problem. I had one a while back that did sorta the same thing. If I put an inline tester on the wire it would start and run, but if that little bit of extra resistance that the tester provided was removed, it wouldn't start to save it. As for the price of the coil, it sounds about right to me. The last one I bought was in the same neighborhood. The deal with Onan is that they use these odd parts so you have to go back to them and they can charge a premium price. Also the older the engine, the more expensive the part. I guess their hoping you'll buy a new one from them instead of spending all the money to fix the old one. I think that's one of the reasons mfgs like Miller has started using Kohler engines in their welders more instead of the Onans. Good luck finding the problem.

Wayne,

I was thinking the same thing....and do they use a high metal temp sensor?

Any remote engine usually has these safeguards in place to protect the engine.

That's a good suggestion too, I hadn't thought of that. None of the Onan powered equipment I've worked on has ever had them, but the original post didn't actually say what type of equipment it was on, or where it was located, so it would be hard to know for sure wether it was likely to have a high temp shutdown or not. Like you said though, if it was a unit set up for a remote/unmonitored location, it would be a distinct possibility that that could be a problem too.

Have you fixed your Onan's shut off problem?
I have a P220G doing the same thing, after a couple of minutes it just shuts off with no spark.
I replaced the coil, wires and voltage reg. It is on a Wheel Horse 520H.Thanks for any help
